Why do scientists study other planets?

Space exploration is the investigation, by means of crewed and uncrewed spacecraft, of the reaches of the universe beyond Earth's atmosphere and the use of the information gained to increase knowledge of the cosmos and benefit humanity. Exploring the outside world is a natural need of human beings. They want to find more resources to create better living conditions. For example, to find new materials, seeds, medications, etc. We may think that space exploration can only be done by going out to space. However, there are more ways to do it. For example, we can use telescopes, satellites and ultimately with manned spacecraft. Until today, there are some space exploration milestones such as the first man in Space (Yuri Gagarin, 1961), the first man (Neil Armstrong) walked on the moon and the International Space Station (ISS) in 1998.

Our home planet - earth is the third planet from the Sun, and it is the only place we know of so far that’s inhabited by living things. There are few key points that make the earth the only planet that supports life. First it is because it has a proper distance from the Sun which can keep a comfortable temperature for things to survive. And Second, it is the only planet in our solar system with liquid water on the surface. Furthermore, beside the water, it has an atmosphere that contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases, which help to support life on the planet. Earth has many types of terrain, from flat lands to deserts, from mountains to wetlands. With the evolution of the Earth, it has become a diverse ecosystem of plants and animals. Our human civilization has existed for six thousands of years. So far, we have built many big cities and we invented cars, trains, and ships which facilitate our daily transportation. Overall, Earth is a evolute, beautiful and unique planet for all of us.

In recent years, with the continuous development of human society, damage to the earth's health has become more and more serious. The most serious problem is the pollution. In order to save costs, factories emit toxic substances in the air and discharge chemicals into the river or ocean. With the increase of private cars, there are more and more automobile exhaust emitted into the air. Therefore, it causes greenhouse effects which means the temperature on Earth becomes higher and higher. Because of a lack of environmental awareness, humans throw garbage in the ocean. The second problem is overpopulation. In 2023, the total population is about 7.8 billion. It brings us poverty, hunger, unemployment, etc. Furthermore, too many people means the consumption of resources is getting less and less. The last problem is the ecosystem has been destroyed by human beings. During civilization, people cut down a large quantity of trees, did widespread mining all over the world or even above the ocean, hunting animals for food. All these problems made Earth sick and finally brought the badness to humans themselves.

In order to save our life plante, we need to do all the things we can do to eliminate the damage of it and make a clean habitat for living species on Earth. In order to eliminate the pollution, our government could encourage electric cars and provide more financial support to car designers. It should also set laws against the emission of toxic substances. The governments should provide more financial aid to the smaller companies to help them install filtering machines. Regarding overpopulation, it may be very hard to control it in the short term, but we could try to cultivate more grains and vegetables with high technologies, like soilless cultivation. Our government can make a looser policy to allow small businesses to hire more employees. People could invent new material to replace wood, and find new energy to replace gasoline and coal. Anyway, all these new creations, new findings and new actions need all the efforts from the government, companies and each of us.

Let’s protect our planet by doing something we can do, because the little things can make a big difference. For example, we can try to ride a bicycle once or twice a week if the weather and distance allow us to. If you live in an area that's not walkable, take advantage of your local mass transit if you can. Or carpool. Every time we turn off the water while we’re brushing our teeth, we are helping to save the water. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, this principle can help us save resources from our ends. Reduce buying new clothes, reuse the packages, recycle beverage cans can all help to decrease the resource usage. The conclusion drawn from the text is that space exploration is important to the future of humanity, and it is more important to protect our planet and take action to ensure its sustainability.
