Whose Lives Matter?

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is about a girl named Cassie whose family is African American and one of the major families that own land. This makes many white people angry so they try to bully, scare, and hurt Cassie’s family. They even go so far as to set a fire on their land but Cassie’s family didn’t back down.. Cassie and her brother need to grow fast in this hostile environment in order to understand racism. In the end, Mr.Morssison and friends help Cassie’s family keep their land. The African American kids suffered from segregation and racism but they did not back down.

Whenever an African American faces racism and segregation, they always stand up for themselves which shows just how strong the powerful belief that black lives matter. This shows how determined African American people could be so that they could have the same rights as everyone else. Jane humiliated Cassie by making her apologize and so Cassie devised a scheme to get her revenge so she could stand up for herself. This example shows the injustice of white people but it conversely shows the African Americans strength, pride, and courage to stand up to the injustice no matter where it comes from. The logans prove that sticking together and being proud of their own religion is the key to overcoming prejudice and injustice.

Treating others with kindness and care shows a belief that everyone is born equally even when there is injustice all around. Everyone should be treated equally regardless of their social status, wealth, or heritage. The Logan family persevered through unfairness which shows that black lives matter. But in real life, all lives matter, not only African American. Whenever a human being is different from others, like appearances, race, gender, or even who they are, they will have a possibility of facing prejudice and injustice. This is wrong for all of us. True justice demands that we treat everyone the same regardless of their differences. If we keep in our hearts that all lives matter, then the world would be a better place and we would have a brighter future.

To make a fair world where everybody matters, we need to stand together against the injustices while fighting for equal rights and respect for all. When standing against racism and cruelty, we should take actions and keep our hearts open for all people. In the story, when Cassie tells Uncle Hammer what happened to her he flies into a rage and tries to attack the white men but the moms stop him. If he had succeeded in attacking the white men, then he could have been lynched or sent to jail. This is not what we should do and instead take actions peacefully and not violently. When faced with racism, we can come together beyond our different backgrounds and take actions to protest and raise awareness against them.

The book Roll of Thunder, Hear My cry by Mildred D. Taylor is a book that shows us segregation and racial violence in the eyes of Cassie Logan. This book raises awareness about racism, segregation, and discrimination. The Logan family showed strength and heart while they battled the people who prejudged them. What they suffered and what they had to get past makes it visible that black lives matter. It’s not only black lives that matter, all lives matter. Everyone should unite together so we can support leaders and call for justice and equality for all people. But as we work for a change, we can’t let anger control us but instead we need to take actions with calmness. If we unite as one and lead with empathy, one day we can achieve equality and justice for all.
