Whose Lives Matter?

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, written by Mildred D. Taylor is about nine-year-old Cassie Logan who lives in rural Mississippi with her three brothers, Stacey (twelve years old), Christopher-John (seven years old), and Little Man (six years old). Unlike most black families in their area, the Logan family owns the land on which they reside. It originally belonged to a white plantation owner, Harlan Granger, who sold it to cover his taxes during Reconstruction. In this story, plots happen constantly, and the Logan family face racism, which is the act of being intimidated or classified as ‘worse than others’ because of the color of your skin.

African American were one of the races that faced racism. Their most horrible period of time was mostly during the 18th century to the 19th century. The white people, or the Americans, thought that African Americans weren’t ‘good’ enough to have the same standards as Americans, so they used different hospitals, schools, et. Rosa Parks was a very famous Civil Rights Movement leader. Once, she was riding a bus when two white passengers came aboard. The bus driver told her to go to the back so that the white passengers could sit. However, Rosa Parks didn’t move. Her act led to the Civil Rights Movement, which established the fair treatment of African Americans.

For more accounts, Asian-Americans weren’t always treated fairly in the past, either. They were overlooked mostly during the mid 1800s. Asisan Americans, the same as African Americans, faced unfair treatment against whites. Mamie Tape was a famous Chinese girl living during that time. She was famous for her family’s act when she couldn’t go to the school, Spring Valley School, because she was Asian American.. Her parents, very angry, wrote a letter and filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco Board of ED and the principal of Spring Valley School, Jennie Hurley, and won.

Native Americans weren’t considered perfect either. During their time, which was 1630s. That time, Europeans had just come to America in hope for a better life. However, this was bad news to Native Americans, though. The Europeans forced tribes in the Southeast to move West, so that they could set up colonies. The famous Cherokee march was a sign of the brutality Native American had to face. Cherokee authorities estimate that nearly 6,000 people died in this 1,200 mile long trip.

Life isn’t always as you expect it to be. People might not treat you the way you want to, but best to just ignore it. Many ethnicities have been judged wrongly in the past. The most famous one was the African American period, when they fought bravely for freedom, rights, and independence, hoping that one day, they would be able to go wherever they wanted, do whatever they wanted, and just be free from the grip of segregation. Race isn’t a thing to be judged by, and like MLK, we hope that one day, we can unite as equal.
