Who Was the Bravest? - Critical Review of Treasure Island

Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, Captain Smollett, Abraham Gray, John Hunter, Richard Gray, and Tom Redruth were the well-known braves of Treasure Island. They had fought the mutineers, led by Long John Silver, groundlessly and extremely bravely and well, and in the end, defeated them. I think that this bravery, though might seem extremely baseless and unexplained, is a good choice for the six men to make. This is because of three reasons: this bravery was for a good cause and would only result in many good things if they won the fray; these people had nothing to lose: they were outnumbered and even though they had the upper hand of supplies, they could never defend against a whole-scale invasion of The Hispaniola, and why would they leave their supplies for the mutineers to take when they could be used against them? Finally, the concept of revenge against the death of many honourable and modest men murdered by Long John Silver is quite unbearable and no one would really want to sail away and escape with such a ghastly thought of the mutineers earning the treasure in mind.

To begin with, the bravery of the eight was for a good cause and would result in many good things if they won this huge battle. The mutiny of Long John Silver was well planned and they wanted to earn the treasure for themselves and all the goods on the Hispaniola. If the braves succeeded on their mission to conquer the mutineers, they could earn the approval of the inland English and also the treasure that they had been seeking for for such a long time. In addition, this bravery also helped kill all the people who weren’t completely honest and loyal with the captain. Even if both sides agreed to a pact and searched for the treasure together, who knows if another person from Long John Silver would kill a man in secret, steal all the treasure for his own, or do something even worse? This bravery could purify the crew, earn the approval for the braves, and could result in finding the treasure quicker and steadier.

Additionally, these braves had nothing to lose. All other options except for braving it and conquering the mutineers were even harder and unnecessary. Escaping with all the supplies and marooning the mutineers on the island would be impossible- the mutineers had already swarmed onto the ship early in the mutiny and getting them off would be impossible. On top of that, it would be seriously damaging to the sailors’ reputation after escaping from mutineers due to timidness and who knows if the mutineers could seize the treasure, escape, and take revenge on the sailors? Another option might be to surrender, but Long John Silver, such a dull man, would never forgive the braves and they probably wouldn’t earn anything good from surrendering. This would also, like the first solution, be seriously damaging to the captain and his men’s reputation. These braves had nothing to lose but their lives, so the only logical solution would be that they brave it and come out to fight the mutineers.
