Which One Do You Choose?

Two ways an organism adapts to its environment are physical adaptation and behavior adaptation. When an organism changes its physical body part or characteristic to help it survive, this is a physical adaptation. When an organism develops a behavior to help it survive, this is a behavior adaptation.

There are many physical adaptation examples. Monkeys have long tails to swing and do many other things. Giraffes have long necks to help them reach leaves from taller branches of trees. Skunks have a stinky smell to defend themselves from predators. Roses and acacia trees have thorns to prevent their leaves from getting eaten, and some trees grow taller than others to get more sunlight.

There are also many behavioral adaptation examples. Geese fly south in the winter to find more food. Bison migrate to find more grass and water. Salmon swim from the ocean, through rivers and finally to a lake to lay eggs. Bears eat a lot to build fat in the fall and hibernate in the winter to save energy. Giraffes can gulp as much as 10 gallons of water in a few minutes to avoid potential predators’ attack.

Physical adaptations do not develop during an individual organism’ life, but over many generations. They are inherited. Behavioral adaptations are changes in behavior that certain organisms use to survive in a new environment. They are mostly learned. I like behavior adaptations better because they don’t take a very long time to achieve.

Adaption is a way an organism makes itself survive in a new environment. When the environment changes, they have to make a change either in a slow or fast way. Otherwise, they will die. But humans can cause the environment to change significantly. As a result, we must protect the environment so that we can protect all the animals and plants.
