What Makes Hannay Succeed? - Critical Review of The Thirty-Nine Steps

THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS talks about a bored man in London, called Richard Hannay, who welcomed his new friend, Scudder, in his flat to let him hide from his enemies. When Scudder was murdered, Hannay was the new suspect, so, disguising himself as the milkman, he travelled to the moor. After the Innkeeper protected him from the police, Hannay found another man, Harry, who believed that Hannay wasn’t the murderer. After disguising himself yet again as the Roadman, the police caught him, and unaware, Hannay ran inside Scudder’s enemy’s house. He soon met Sir Walter after exploding himself out of the house and they found where the Black Stone lived, just the house with 39 steps below. After trapping all three members, England went to war.

While Hannay acted smart and quickly with his cunning disguises, all of us can act like him with our own special talents. During the challenges, just being at a level like everyone else is never good enough, since being the hero always means that we have to be one step ahead. In the story, Richard Hannay acted smart and diligent, especially in his tricky disguises. As a milkman, he got away unsuspected from the police, just like the Roadman disguise. He also managed to escape in a fancy car as Marmaduke Jopley. Intelligence is one of the biggest necessities in our lives, no matter if we’re in the jungle or in the comfortable chair with hundreds of servants holding tiny treats. Either way, there would be danger waiting for us at each end: we would need to work hard as a Boss or CEO; we would need to be quick and risky in a jungle full of biting snakes. Everyone is intelligent in a special way, whether it is disguises (like Hannay) or quick learning abilities or just being a kind heart towards animals or people. Being smart includes every single thing we can think of, it’s just a small part of ‘How to make others happy in front of us’.

Patriotism is the strong love and attachment to a country, not just the love for our family, pets, and friends. Patriotism is the love for something even bigger, for a whole country, and one would do anything as much as risking their life to protect it. In the story, when Hannay told Sir Walter about his story, he already got off the Wanted List, but he wanted to do more than that as a true hero for his country. He decided to save his country from the Black Stone members and he did, nearly sacrificing his life. Patriotism is when one begins to feel the love and bond toward one’s own country, making an attachment towards the two, just like an owner and a street dog. Although showing affection towards our family, pets, and friends is enough already, some who are bonded with almost everyone they see in their country, might take things to a much higher level. Despite the dangers, some would risk their lives to become a hero for their country, just so that they would be happy to see another’s smiling face. Patriotism isn’t just affection towards one’s own country, but the sacrifice from one in order to protect it, just like a chicken mother and her eggs.

Heroism includes courage and bravery throughout the whole mission, with our without a companion to help. Courage and bravery requires a lot of hard work, especially when one is alone with nobody to encourage them. In the story, Hannay was dying of thirst in the dovecot, but because his enemies were just outside, he resisted the fountain outside. At the near end of the story, Hannay bravely showed up in the house with 39 steps, all alone, and started dealing with the three criminals. A hero could save the whole world, a small city, or even just a little family of three; but becoming a true hero isn’t just trembling as one tries to climb a tree to save a little kitten, instead, one should climb the tree confidently and bravely, though the insides might feel a bit scared. Heros all have a different life on the outside and in their private little home when no one is looking. A hero’s courage and bravery always has to be shown to the whole world, when despair and tiredness would always hide in the background. The courage and bravery makes one complete their task, otherwise, they would likely be stuck for their entire lives in the middle of danger. Being a true hero involves lots of hard work to maintain the presence of a brave and encouraging hero.

THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS talks about a man named Richard Hannay, a suspected ‘criminal’ who changed into a hero who saved a ton of people’s lives. Not everyone could be a true hero for a big thing, for they have to use things smartly and include all the uses they can. While their intelligence keeps working, they would also have to remember the advice from his past family and care for others on the way of his mission to prevent any outnumbered position. Heroism is when one is hard working, never gives up, and is always brave wherever they are. A true hero doesn't need to save a whole planet or universe, but only needs to show their courage, bravery, love, and use their intelligence.
