What Makes Hannay Succeed? - Critical Review of The Thirty-Nine Steps

This book is called The Thirty-Nine Steps, it is an adventure novel which talks about Hannay’s adventure. The hero, Richard Hannay, a man who was disgusted with his life and hated London, met Franklin Scudder, knew that the world would be at stake and began his journey from England to Scotland. During his adventure, he encountered many dangers from German spies and policemen, they chased Hannay but he cleverly escaped again and again, finally, he succeeded. It was this adventure that showed his brave side. Then, what makes Hannay succeed?


The first point is that Hannay was good at disguising himself. When Hannay found that Scudder was murdered in his flat a few days later nonetheless, and he decided to disguised like a milkman and ran away one day. It was because he was good at disguising that he could escape from London, saved his life. Next time Hannay disguised himself as a roadman to trick the Black Stone spy ring into questioning him. He has lots of knowledge and good acting skills to answer all the questions without showing any flaw. Camouflage is more than just dressing up like someone else, Hannay also needs to act like the one he disguised, to avoid detection. Hannay’s success is not just because he has courage, he is brave, but also because he is good at thinking, disguising.


Hannay’s success is inseparable from his heroism. In the beginning Richard Hannay lived in London city, live a rich life and enjoy endless fun, like anyone else, but he hated his life, disgusted with London and the entertainment there. That suggested Hannay was different from the rest of the English peoples. Then his adventure shows his intelligent and courage perfectly. After Scudder died, Hannay was in danger and fled from London. Chased, escaped, the policemen and spies followed him all the way, but he cleverly escaped again and again. More than once he was in danger of death during his journey, but he used his courage to win everytimes, and succeed at last. Hannay was a real hero.


Patriotism often inspires a man’s courage and wisdom in the danger, love of country and determination to save the country can make a man to be a hero. Infact every person has patriotism inner, and when it’s aroused, it will be a very strong power. In the story Hannay knew from Scudder, the world would be at stake. On his adventure, he was always being hunted, being questioned, being cheated, but he lived to complete his journey. Because of his patriotism, he has made an important contribution to the country.


At last, Hannay and the officials comb Scudder's codebook, they find the thirty-nine steps, and an anchored yacht, Ariadne, dicover the German officer, all of them are arrested. When the United Kingdom enters the war, Hannay comissioned captain. He succeed. With his disguising skills, his heroism, his patriotism, he becomes a succesful
