The Thirty Nine Steps is a book about how an innocent man escapes from wrongly accused murder. Richard Hannay was accused of killing a French spy, Franklin Scudder, and people were trying to kill him. Hannay becomes a milkman and travels to Galloway to escape his pursuers, and since he doesn’t know the place there, he almost gets into a car crash. He meets Harry Bullivant, a politician who helps him, a road mender who swaps jobs with him, and a archeologist who traps him unsuccessfully. Hannay goes to Sir Walter Bullivant’s house and there he spots one of his pursuers, and arrests him and the rest of the bad guys. There are many reasons that cause him to succeed in his tasks.
Hannay succeeds because he is an expert at disguising himself as whatever he wants to be to escape. Disguises are an important part of escaping things because it allows the person disguised to look like somebody they actually are not. It makes the people looking for them get confused, which would lead them off track. In the story, Hannay disguises himself as four things. He disguises himself as a milkman, Scottish farmer, road mender, and his enemy, Marmaduke Jopley. He borrows clothes and has an accent for every one of his roles in disguise, which lets him succeed in running away. Having a disguise gives a person an advantage when they are being pursued because the people chasing them will get confused. A person still has to be an expert at disguises in order to fool anyone, which Hannay already is. Disguises help with plans and can also distract people from looking. Having good disguises is a reason that Hannay succeeds.
Hannay also has heroism, which is courage and bravery, in all of his actions, which is another reason why Hannay succeeds. He shows courage in all of his actions, although he knows that it may result in him getting caught by the police. Even though he is not the murderer, he still shows bravery when he tells people he isn’t the murderer, which might make him get hurt. Some times when he shows bravery is when he is fighting his enemy, Marmaduke Jopley, who can call the police to arrest him, and when he jumps out of the car which is falling, to face the cops and almost get caught. The acts of heroism that Hannay portrayed shows that he will never say that he is the murderer, which makes him perseverant. Having heroism is an important thing that leads to success because it lets somebody have a reason to keep having courage instead of just surrendering. Although it might lead to a bad consequence, heroism is still good because it helps give confidence that the person can succeed.
Hannay has the value of patriotism, which is the quality of having devotion to his own country. Hannay has many instances of showing patriotism in the story. He respects his country a lot, and tries to do his best for it to be good. Some instances of him showing patriotism is when he makes sure people know who is the real murderer. He tries to have justice in his country, and also shows patriotism when he finds the murderer himself for the country’s benefit. He also was commissioned captain of boats in World War 1. These instances of him showing patriotism is very good of him, since he made sure his country didn’t randomly assume things, so he found the murderers to find justice in the country. Having patriotism can have many benefits, like having a better country to live in with nicer people, although too much patriotism starts a blind devotion, which isn’t good. Patriotism is a good quality that helps Hannay succeed in all of his tasks that he tries to do.
Hannay succeeds in his tasks because of many reasons. He has lots of good qualities and values people should learn from. The reasons that cause success for Hannay are that he is good at disguising himself, and that he also has the values of heroism and patriotism. Hannay is very perseverant, which is why I like him. His qualities and values that make him like he is in the book are very good. Hannay is a good person who always tries to succeed and get the best for everyone.
