The story “Here’s My Dollar” written by Gary Soto, talks about a little girl who does big things. Angel overheard his grandmother talking about the Chaffee Zoo. She said that they didn’t have enough money. Angel felt sympathetic for the zoo, so she wrote a letter to the zoo, she donated one dollar, telling the community what she felt, hoping that it would help. The community was so impressed that they sent it all over the state. Soon, everyone was donating. The zoo thanked her for everything they could ever do. But Angel didn’t stop there. She kept on encouraging them to donate, and she went on the TV, T-shirts, and caps.
People often thought that they needed to be famous and rich to be on charity and to be on television, but they didn’t have to be, anyone could be famous, even poor people or children. People follow and listen to famous people because they believe in them, and think that they can solve any problem, they pay no attention to the poor and unpopular ones. But poor and unpopular ones could make a difference, too. Angel, a little girl who wasn’t very rich or famous, made a big difference. Angel wanted to help a zoo that had money trouble. So, she wrote a letter to the zoo that said Angel’s feelings, it also included one dollar in the letter. That impressed the others, so they started to donate too. Not long after, Angel was on caps, shirts, and TV. Small people can do big things.
Compare with Angel I don’t think that I’m brave enough to face the fact that I’m famous. I’m a little bit shy, and I don’t want to be on TV or in cap and clothes, I’d be embarrassed. I don’t want to lead strangers and tell them to donate. I don’t like being around strangers or meeting new people. I can’t be willing to carry jars into each classroom and explain to them what they should do, I will look like an idiot! I’ll feel utterly uncomfortable because I’ll be busy day and night, and I may not know what to say or what to do. I don’t think I will ever be like Angel.
Today, we can improve charity, because we are in modern society. We have many things that the past doesn’t, like computers, TikTok, YouTube, and WeChat. Newspapers can only alert people in a small area, unlike WeChat or other computer stuff, they can send messages in an instant all over the world. At her time, Angel was smart enough to use newspapers, it was the fastest thing at her time, but if she were in modern times, she could just send a video to tell them that the zoo is in trouble, that way, the whole world will be donating. The world has improved and the modern society is growing stronger.
Before knowing Angel’s story, I knew that kids could make a difference, but I didn’t know a kid could be so brave, I thought only famous people or some special adult could do it. After reading the story, I realized I can make a difference too, I can post a video to convince them, to do something. I can have new ideas about making the world a better place. Charity is very important and a good activity. It helps us to make the world a better place. The world isn’t always the way I wanted it, but together, everybody can help perfect the world.
