Thirty-Nine Steps by John Duchan is about a man named Richard Hanny who discovers a plot against his country from a man who later dies from murder. Richard has to go on the run and try to save his country before it is too late. He goes through many adventures where he tricks his pursuers, gets chased by a policeman, gets pursued by an airplane, steals a car, steals clothes and in one of them he stumbles into a lonely house and is invited inside. He soon realizes the man is one of his biggest enemies but he is already locked up. He finds some dynamite and being an experienced engineer, he uses it to escape. He runs and hides on a birdhouse roof to once again escape the gang trying to stop him from exposing their plans. This passage presents a thrilling adventure with drama and life or death stakes which makes it the best adventure out of all of them. A clever character constantly facing dramatic situations with non-stop suspense attracts readers.
The adventure with constant drama and surprise ensures readers remain fully engaged. Hanny has to lie and escape from the leader of the gang he has been trying to avoid and stop this whole time. The leader is a little skeptical but still confident that he has the right person. This is the most dramatic scene out of all the adventures. At first, Hanny tries to lie and say he is a different person than the leader thinks by giving all kinds of reasons. Other members of the gang aren’t sure who he is, whether Hanny or his made up person he says he is. The leader locks him in a storeroom but there are explosives in a cabinet Hanny finds that he uses to pop a window frame and narrowly escape by climbing onto a birdhouse roof away from view. Hanny uses countless techniques to fool the black stone gang and escape. Consistent drama and tricks through Hanny's actions gets you hooked into the adventure and keeps you entertained for the duration of the adventure.
Another engaging element of this exciting adventure is the clever, resourceful and brave protagonist Hanny. He has met countless seemingly impossible situations but he always finds a way to escape using all of his resources. When Hanny walks into a lonely hut he finds himself face to face with the gang trying to capture him and although he tries to lie about his identity, he is still locked away. He escapes by using dynamite he found in a closet to pop the window frame and escape before his pursuers can catch him again. He is also very brave because even though he was already very tired and injured a little, he still went on. Hanny's personality and versatility is very honorable and fun to read his story of escaping a deadly gang plotting against his country and then stopping them. Overall, Hanny is very clever at eluding the gang and making his plans work even if it seems impossible at first. This makes the adventure enthralling to see what Hanny will do next.
The life or death stakes Hanny faces continually throughout the adventure also help keep readers engaged from beginning to the end.If Hanny didn’t escape, the gang would find out his identity eventually and he would probably be dead, This adds to the tense environment and pressure the reader can sense and Hanny feels. Before he got captured, Hanny realized that the world was in danger of another war which he found out from a mysterious person who later was murdered. When he dies, the gang would now try killing Hanny and Hanny knew this so he had to run and escape the gang while also trying to save the world. The mysterious person found out how intense this life or death situation was when he was murdered by the gang for knowing all of this information. After Hanny got trapped, it was uncertain whether he would live or not but he used the dynamite to escape, barely, with his life. This makes this adventure very unexpected and exciting when events happen like this one and he still finds a way to escape.
Thirty-Nine steps by John Duchan is a very dramatic and exciting book. In this book there are countless adventures that the main character Hanny takes part in but the most exciting one is the one where he is captured by the gang leader trying to stop him but he escapes by using dynamite he finds and hiding. This is very dramatic and the way the author describes the situation makes it even more tense and entertaining to read. Hanny has to act clever to escape the leader and he almost lies his way out of their grasp but the leader is smart enough to still confine him. It was life or death for Hanny because the gang would have eventually found out his identity one way or another but he escaped before they were sure they had the right person. The author crafted this alluring adventure that fascinates me about what Hanny can do.
