Story Review of There’s Nothing Like Baseball

Characters: I- Emma, Jamal, Nikki, brother Greg

Setting: Spring

Plot:  Emma always knows that I’d play baseball.

Perspective: First person viewpoint

Genre: Realistic fiction story

The story of There’s Nothing Like Baseball written by Angela Johnson talks about a little girl named Emma and her friend Jamal. She loved baseball. She would sit in the grass with her friends. She always knew that she’d play baseball. It was coming when it was spring. In the morning, she always thinks about it. She and Jamal were on the same team. They always throw the ball and catch it. She liked standing infront the mirror with her uniform. Rex and Sophie were the teachers. They would always clap. She wanted to be the shortstop but Jamal wants to be a shortstop too. Jamal hopes she is it. Her stomach feels bad. In the dream, she was happy but Jamal was not. She doesn't want her friend to be sad. She feels sorry for Jamal. But then the shortstop was Nikki in real life. She was talking to Jamal about how fun it was.

Is it true that there is nothing much more important than playing baseball? No it is not true that there is nothing much more important than playing baseball because friendship and happiness is more important than baseball.  In this story, Emma felt sad for her best friend when her friend did not get what he wanted to get. Later that night, her stomach feels bad. The grass doesn’t smell as good. The sound the bats make doesn’t make her smile. In the dream, She got what she wanted but Jamal did not. She was happy but Jamal was not happy. She doesn't want her good friend to feel sad. She feels sorry for Jamal. She did not care about herself but instead, She cared about her best friend. Nothing is more important than having friendship.

The belief of sports is to try your best and everyone gets a chance to play. Happiness is much more important than getting what we want very much. In this story, Rex and Sophie want everyone to have a turn and to try their best to play. They think that happiness, trying your best every time and everyone gets a chance to play is the most important thing for them. We have to try our best all the time. Whatever the problem is, we have to try our best before we give up.

Sometimes, when we are reading a story, we might notice that there are sentences that are very beautiful and describing a season or something else. That is because the author wants the reader to guess what it is. The detailed descriptions make the sentences longer and longer sentences are more beautiful than short sentences. In this story, when the author describes the weather, instead of saying it is spring, it said baseball was coming when the ice dripped drops from the roof. Baseball was coming when the tulips in the park poked through the ground. The author used a vivid description like the word dripped and poked. Longer sentences are more beautiful. And if we use a vivid description, the sentences will be more vivid.

Emma really loved baseball but then her friend did not get what he wanted and he was sad. Emma was then sorry for him cause she got what she wanted and she was happy. For the next few days, the sound the bats made did not make her smile. Friendship and happiness are more important than playing baseball. It is important that everyone is happy. Longer sentences are more beautiful.
