Story Review of The War of the Wall

The story ‘The War of the Wall’ was written by Toni Cade Bambara, it was mainly about the narrator and a painter lady. The narrator and his friend Lou found the painter lady painting on their private wall. This wall was used to remember their sacrificed cousin Jimmy Lyons, so he was getting mad with this stranger. Other people were acting friendly towards the painter lady, but she was focused on the painting and unconcerned with the enthusiasm of the kids. The author was furious about the behavior of the lady, and willing to tell his father about this. The painter lady made mama impatient when she was ordering food. Mama apologized for her impatience, and made it clear to the narrator of the painter lady's behavior, but the narrator didn't agree with his mom. The narrator was trying to recapture their wall. Grandma called graffiti a shame. The narrator and his friends saw the drawing from the painter lady, the painting was about famous activists and liberation, she also engraved Jimmy Lyon's name on the wall to memorize him.

Wars are the root of misfortune, it begins with conflicts and leads to conflicts that harmed innocents, which was cruel and unfair. Wars forced people to give up their fortune and fight for a side, and the price was countless lives and grieves. In the story ‘The War of the Wall’, the narrator mentioned that his cousin died in the Vietnam war. He and his friend Lou found out Jimmy was never coming home from the war in Vietnam to take them fishing. The narrator was also sensitive to the opposing country, America. He was furious when he saw ‘New York’ on the license plate. The Vietnam war causes the death of the narrator’s cousin, and hatred toward countries. Countries launch wars easily for one’s benefit, but did they ever realize that the victims of the wars are always the poor, innocent citizens? Wars destroy their family, beliefs and thoughts, which is totally unfair to those people who have to be involved into the bloody war without their will.

Attachments are a form of love that can be shown by the deepest emotions and feelings. It also helps people to memorize the ones they love, and the ones who left them unforgettable memories. In the story ‘The War of the Wall’, the narrator’s beloved cousin Jimmy Lyons died in the Vietnam war. To memorize him, the narrator engraved his name onto the wall. At the end of the story, the narrator and his neighbors found that the painter lady drew a rainbow on Jimmy Lyons’s name, and wrote an inscription on the wall to memorize Jimmy. The narrator was mad at the painter lady at the beginning because that wall is the thing that shows his attachment towards his cousin, which means a lot to him. We show our attachment to things and people because we love them, and it saves a memory for us.

We shouldn’t judge people before we get to know them. If we hadn’t gotten to know a person or the whole event, then we should not cause unnecessary misunderstandings. In the story ‘The War of the Wall’, the narrator disliked the painter lady because he found her drawing unauthorized on their private wall, which was used to memorize his dead cousin. He was getting furious when he found she was too persistent to paint on this wall. But at the end of the story, the narrator realized that he misunderstood the intention of this lady. She supported them and honored their community, she painted activists and engraved an inscription for them and her cousin Jimmy Lyons. During the time when the narrator hadn’t figured out the truth, he even pleaded with his mom to shoot this lady. It was scary, because it shows that a person can be fully misled by incorrect information and thoughts. We should judge things in the condition of using an overall perspective, orelse there will be unnecessary issues happening because of the misunderstandings.

In conclusion, the story ‘The War of the Wall’ written by Toni Cade Bambara demonstrated some meaningful themes. Wars are the root of misfortune, it begins with conflicts and leads to conflicts that harmed innocents, which was cruel and unfair. Wars forced people to give up their fortune and fight for a side, and the price was countless lives and grieves. Wars destroy their family, beliefs and thoughts, which is totally unfair to those people who have to be involved into the bloody war without their will.
