Story Review of The Ugly Vegetable

Characters: Mother, “I”,Neighbors

Setting: in the garden, in the spring

Plot: “My”family is growing ugly vegetables

Genre: Realistic fictioin

The story Ugly vegetables is written by Grace Lin, it talks about a Chinese family that lives in another country. When spring comes, they want to plant their little garden. The Chinese family is planting vegetables, but their neighbors are planting flowers. The Chinese family is using different tools than their neighbors when the function is the same. The little girl asks why they are using different tools than their neighbors? Her mom said that they are growing different things than their neighbors. A few days later the plants grow, the little girl’s plants are like grass, but their neighbors’ plants are like leaves. The little girl wants to grow flowers by now. When mother cooks the vegetables into soup the whole neighborhood comes to eat.

We need to have our own choice, not just following the majority. If everybody has the same idea, this world won’t have new things. In the story, the little girl wants to follow the majority, but her mother stops her. If her mother did not stop her, she would not have a chance to drink the yummy soup. I think following the majority will make us have less creativity and it may let us miss a chance to get good things.

We can’t just look at things on the surface to judge how good it is. Something look not perfect but maybe it is useful or has great function. In the story, the vegetables are very ugly, so the little girl doesn't like them, but when her mom cooks them, they are very yummy. I think that we can’t just judge things by looking at their surface.

Different plants need different tools to help them grow. The tool that fits the plant is the best. In the story, the Chinese family uses different tools than their neighbors, because the things that grow are different. Because they use the tools that fit vegetables, so the vegetables grow very well. I think the tool that fits the thing is the best, it is the same for humans.

In conclusion, I think it is not good for us if we follow the majority, it will make us have less creativity. If things look ugly, we should try to figure out how useful it is or the function of it. If we judge it first, it will be very unfair for that thing. Plants need the tools that fit it, or it may not grow well, it is the same for human
