Story Review of The Ugly Vegetable

Characters: The little girl and her Mom,neighbors

Setting: in the garden

Plot: “we” grow vegetables in the garden and it’s different from other neighbors.

Genre: realistic fiction

This story written by Grace Lin mainly talks about a little girl and her mom growing vegetables in their garden while their neighbors are growing flowers. In the spring she helps her mom to start the garden and plants the seeds. They water the garden and then put some funny pictures beside them. Their garden grows little by little while the flowers grows beautifully in their neighbor’s gardens. Soon their vegetables grow, but they are ugly. One day, mom picks the vegetables and makes a special yummy soup. All the neighbors are attracted to my house to share the soup. The next spring, people grow flowers and Chinese vegetables together in their garden.

In the book, I learned that it’s ok to be different. We don’t have to follow the majority. Different people like different things. You don’t have to do the same as others do. You just need to do what you want to do. You only have to choose what’s the best for you. In the story, mom grows Chinese vegetables in our garden while all the neighbors grow flowers in their garden. Even though the vegetables are not as beautiful as the flowers, mom can make yummy soup out of these ugly vegetables. To mom, growing vegetables is better than growing flowers. And that makes mom feel happy. In a word, if you get what you want, that’s enough. It doesn’t matter if you are not the same as others.

When we do something difficult, we must be patient. We don’t know what will happen at the end on the first day when we do something. We need to wait and see. Good things will happen if you work hard on it. In the story, the little girl asks her mom many time why not her mom grow beautiful flowers as their neighbors do. She feels upset and disappointed when she sees the ugly vegetables growing in the garden. But mom tells her to wait and see. In the end, everyone loves the vegetable soup mom makes. The neighbors even want to trade their flower with the soup. It takes time for the ugly vegetables to become tasty soup. Sometimes, when you calm down and wait, you will find that the result is far better than what you think.

In a good neighborhood, people are always open-minded. They respect other people and learn from each other. They can notice the good points from other people. And they are willing to make a change. In the story, the neighbors who grow flowers see the beauty of mom’s vegetable garden. The next spring, they also grow some Chinese vegetables beside the flowers. And mom grows some flowers next to her vegetables. It’s a win-win situation for everyone in the neighborhood. That is a happy ending. When everyone can see the advantages in others and learn from them, we can soon be a better person.

In conclusion, I learned a lot from this story. It teaches me not to be afraid of difference. And it also helps me to be patient when we do something difficult. We just wait and see when the result is not ready yet. At the same time, it makes me understand what a good neighborhood looks like. In a good neighborhood, you will become more tolerant. I will highly recommend this book to you because you will learn more than you think.
