The story the Sand Castle by Alma Luz Villanueva is about a family who lives in the future and global warming where the sun has cooked everything. The family is going to the beach and they have to wear armor like clothes to protect them from the sun. This is also caused by nuclear testing that was stopped a while ago but by then, it was too late. When they get to the beach, the grandma plays with her grandchildren and they build sand castles. The grandma flashes back to when she was a child and playing on the beach and they could wear bathing suits. When she makes a sand castle with the children, she uses some special sea shells from the past and around the world to decorate it. Her children know how important these are and protests at first but the grandma still uses them. This story explores the themes of global warming, the power of memories or legacies, and flashbacks.
Global warming is a critical issue facing the world today and will continue to be a disaster in the future, as illustrated in the story. It occurs when carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, causing the Earth to gradually heat up.In the story, global warming has been left untouched for so long that the sun has heated everything up and burned a lot of animals, plants, and earth. This shows that if we don't deal with global warming now, it will have greater consequences in the future. For example, there could be intense natural disasters that will get stronger as global warming progresses and at some point, we might not be able to stop it. Also, the people there have to wear protective clothing that helps them not burn from the sun and get to do daily things which shows how lucky we are today that we don't have to do that. Global warming has advanced a lot in this future but it could be ours in the next century if we do nothing. To stop global warming, we must begin with ourselves and recognize that failing to take action can lead to serious consequences.
Flashbacks are used in stories to give context about a situation or person involved. In this story, flashbacks to a time before global warming frequently illustrate the contrast between the past and the future. In the story, the grandma is one of the only people who lived back then where the sun was normal and global warming wasn’t that big of a deal. This flashback gives the reader an understanding of the difference between the effects of the sun now, and the past where it wasn’t much of a big deal and global warming was just starting to become a major issue that people started ro recognize. There is also a scene when the grandma flashbacks to when she was a child and playing at the beach with her grandpa. This probably motivated her to do that with her children and simply gives us context about the author's choice. Flashbacks can give readers vital information about what is happening and are usually emotional moments or memories that the arthur writes about to enhance the reader’s engagement and highlight the changes over time.
Legacies and memories are vital aspects of individuals that can be passed down to their children. Memories help people connect and reveal the accomplishments and experiences of a person. In the story, the grandma loves building sand castles and going to the beach when she was a child but now, it is too dangerous and she wants to share this memory with her kids. She does this by going to the beach and teaching them, hence lengthening her legacy to them so they can show their children how to do it and etcetera. Also, the grandma has a memory of eagles that has blurred starting sixty years ago where she was with her grandpa. This memory includes her grandpa crying when he finally sees the eagles. Her memory isn’t as good now but she still tells them to the children and lets them fill in the parts she doesn’t remember. By passing down memories, you can extend your legacy to the people you share them with.It could be the spirit or symbol in a family.
The story the Sand castle by Alma Luz Villanueva is about a family who lives in the future and the earth is so hot that many species have died and they have to use protective clothing to survive. This story teaches us about flashbacks, global warming, and legacies or memories. Global warming is a worldwide issue where the earth warms up a little each year because of the increased use of fossil fuels and its emission into the air. Even though the degree change is little, it can have big changes on the environment and make natural disasters more intense. In order to give background information and a storyline behind certain people, authors use flashbacks like in this story, the grandma has many memories of being a girl, and playing with her parents. Legacies and memories are important to a human and sharing memories with others will help spread your legacies among the people and help you be remembered.
