The book The Reluctant Dragon is a fairy tale story, written by Kenneth Grahame. It talks about a boy who met a dragon in a cave which is located in his village. This dragon is different from other dragons we usually know. He likes reading poems and writing. He always stays calm and never did any bad actions to the villagers. However, since the villagers knew the existence of this dragon, they wanted to kill him. In order to save the dragon, the boy went to talk to St George - the dragon killer and convinced him to give up killing the dragon. To save the dragon, the boy found a good scheme to cheat the villagers. Therefore, in the battle, all the fights were pretended, it was not a real battle. In the end, St. George and the boy showed the truth to all the villagers and they had a grand feast together.
We should not understand and judge a person based on the inherent impression, but should break the inherent impression and truly understand this individual. If we judge someone from his appearance or based on our common recognition, we may misunderstand that person or even treat him wrongly. We may think that a person with a lot of tattoos on the arms and legs, is a bad person. However, maybe he isn’t. Like the villagers wanted to kill the innocent dragon, just because they thought all the dragons are horrible and harmful. This shows that a fixed image of the dragon became the reason for killing it. Therefore, we should understand a person fully before judging him.
Friendship is truly beautiful and valuable for all of us, because it makes our lives full of happiness. When we have problems, it’s our friends who come to help. When we are happy, it’s our friends who laugh with us. When we are sad, it’s our friends who accompany us. In the story, everyone in the village wants to kill the dragon, except the boy. Because the dragon is the boy’s friend. The boy was always trying to find solutions when the dragon was in danger. This demonstrates the beautifulness of friendship. The dragon was very lucky, he has a kind and smart friend who saved his life. In order to make true friends, we should be kind, honest and be generous.
Reading, knowledge and imagination are very important elements for problem solving. When we think and read a lot, we can have more ideas and ways to solve problems. In real life, most of the cases, if we think and do things in the usual way, it will be very hard to find the solutions or ideas. The boy in the story, who reads a lot, makes him able to find an ingenious and imaginative scheme to save the dragon. If in a common story, the main character could be killing the villagers or killing the dragon as an ending. However, in this book, the boy’s plan is very unpredictable which increased the interest of this story. Being naturally good at reading and thinking is not easy, but we should slowly cultivate ourselves to read daily, accumulate knowledge which will empower ourselves to better solve the problems or overcome the difficulties.
All in all, the reluctant dragon is a fascinating story. There are a lot of dialogues which can easily bring us into a fairy tale world. I have also learned mainly three things from this book. First, don’t judge a person or a thing from our inherent impression. This might lead to a bad result. Second, I deeply agree to make our best friends who will bring us happiness and sunshine into our lives. Last but not the least, try to read as a habit, it will make us become a person with knowledge, imagination and capable of solving problems in an unexpected way.
