Story Review of The Princess And The Pizza

The Princess and the Pizza written by Mary Jane and Herm Auch is about a girl named Paulina who competes in three competitions, trying to win the prince of the kingdom as her husband. Paulina started off as a princess, but her father soon gave up the throne to become a woodcarver in a neighboring kingdom. The new queen, Queen Zelda, holds a competition to determine which princess (real princess) is worthy of having her son as husband. Paulina passes the series of competitions, only to find out after the last competition that Queen Zelda was just tricking her all along. Pauline learns that sometimes people can’t be trusted, and soon gains fame in the city for her delicious pizzas that she tries to impress the queen with. Paulina also learns that she can still be happy without a rich husband.

Independence is a skill important to master. Sometimes, you need to be independent. You can’t just rely on somebody else for every single thing you do. You need to try and survive on your own. In the story, Paulina has to learn to be independent to complete the tasks the queen has set before her, as she cannot get help from anybody else. Coming form a family of royalty and used to being treated like royalty, this is a big improvement, learning how to be independent and strive on your own, instead of relying on someone else to carry your back. Sometimes, you can rely on someone, and it will do you good. But other times, you just gotta stick to your instincts and go on your own. Independence is a skill that will be useful in society. You just have to know when to use it.

Creativity is an ability that enables those to be creative and open-minded. Seriously, creativity is a huge skill in common life. If you are stuck in a forest, well, maybe you can take inventory and use your creativity to survive a few days. Creativity also loosens the risk of being narrow-minded. Paulina had to be very creative in the three competitions, especially in the last challenge. She had to cook up a dish to impress the queen in order to win over the prince’s hand. Even though she learns that the whole get-to-marry-the-prince thing was fake, she still put effort into the whole thing and used creativity to win the fake competition. Paulina was able to run her creative juices to impress the queen. When your creative juices are flowing, your path to success is flowing. Being creative has its specialties. But sometimes, you need to know to stick to the rules.

Fairy tales are like threads intertwined with each other at some point. Fairy tales are all related to each other in a way, whether it’s the dramatic plot, the heroes or heroines, or the mythical creatures of setting. In The Princess and the Pizza, the author first uses the plot of The Princess and the Pea to capture the reader's attention. The princesses have to sleep on a lot of mattresses with a pea underneath all of them and see if they can feel the pea. Next, it’s Cinderella. The queen gets a glass slipper probably similar to the one in Cinderella and makes the princesses try it on. Whoever can fit their foot into the shoe is still in the competition. Last, the author uses Rumplestiltskin, but instead of spinning hay into gold, the princess has to make a dish. Each fairy tale has its uniqueness. A fairy tale usually holds a morale that can actually improve your life.

The Princess and the Pizza shares many lessons with the readers that why should all focus on. Learning how to be independent in certain circumstances is important, and being able to have creativity is also a skill you should learn. Lastly, readers should never forget that lying is never a good habit. It won;t do you good, and it won’t help the person you’re lying to, either. In The Princess and the Pizza, Paulina learns the first two life lessons, and the third one is more focused on Queen Zelda. The PRincess and the Pizzaq is a very queer but fun story than also uses plots from other fairy tales, like Cinderella, and The Princess and the Pea. The third competition is more like Rumplestiltskins, but instead, Paulina has to cook a dish instead of spinning hay into gold. The Princess and the Pea gives us valuable lessons that will be useful throughout daily life.
