Story Review of The Medicine Bag

The Medicine Bag is a story written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve. Martian and his sister Cheryl have always been bragging about their grandfather. Martian is embarrassed because his grandfather is actually going to come and he is old and sick and will not live up to their friend’s expectations. When their grandfather came, it raised a lot of interest, but when their grandfather just came in, he fainted. Martian’s grandfather was almost dead, and will pass on his medicine bad to Martin. After school, many people would come visit grandfather and will listen to the interesting stories that would amaze them. Even though this was joyful to Martin's grandfather, this will drain grandfather’s energy. One day when Martin came back from school, the room was completely closed and it was only Martin and his grandfather. His grandfather told Martin the story of how his own father had passed this down and tried to find a goal. Martin understands the importance of the medicine and takes care of it as his grandfather finally takes his last breaths.

Culture is always in anyone’s family and sometimes is very important and meaningful to the family. In the book, The Medicine Bag, it was very important for the grandfather to pass down the medicine bag to the eldest son in the family. This was to help complete a goal that both Martin's grandfather and his dad hadn't completed yet. Many of these family traditions and cultures happen in the world. Traditions like Martin’s family’s are meaningful and many of them take these traditions seriously. The Medicine bag has a great value and Martin’s grandfather was so dedicated to deliver the medicine bag that he used all his energy that he had just to send it to Martin before he died. Families can dedicate their lives and make sacrifices to try to follow the beliefs and customs of their families. Culture is something that might also decrease as they get passed on. As time goes on the modern traditions might not accept old traditions. Culture should be accepted around the world.

People shouldn’t just judge someone by just how they look. Martin and his sister both were bragging about their grandfather and the stories that they have been told. These stories that Martin has been telling have been making expectations high. In reality their grandfather is very old and weak. He doesn't even look like the Indians in the TV shows. This is why Martin is embarrassed of his friends seeing his grandfather. Many people are scared that sometimes they may not meet others' expectations. Even though you think that someone can’t meet others' standards, things can go better than they seem to be. When Martin’s friends finally got to see his grandfather, his grandfather amazed them with stories of his life. Many times, people don’t realize the good attributes of others.

Blending into the lives of modern time has hardships. In the book The Medicine Bag, Martin was anticipating getting the medicine bag because he thinks that his friends would laugh at him wearing the dirty thing. With modern times, what you wear and how you look affects how others treat and see you as. When Martin’s grandfather gave the medicine bag to Martin, he told Martin that he didn’t need to wear the medicine bag because he knew what would happen in the modern world if Martin actually wore the medicine bag. Expectations are pretty high in the world right now and people can judge you because of one singular action. Many people are careful of their actions and how they behave to continue with a good reputation. With so many people judging your everyday actions, people will have to make decisions of how they act just like Martin and his grandfather.

The Medicine Bag is a very cultural story about a boy named Martin and his grandfather. This book talks about culture in three ways, the meaningfulness of culture, don’t judge others, and how culture can interfere with modern expectations. People in the world follow different cultures. These cultures impact people’s lives immensely. They can make sacrifices for what they believe in and for their goals. Martin’s grandfather made a hard journey going to Martin just to deliver the medicine bag. At the start of the book, Martin was embarrassed of his sick grandfather and didn’t want to show his grandfather to his friends. After his friends insisted on seeing Martin’s grandfather, they were amazed by the stories that Grandfather had told them. Modern expectations are important and things can affect how others see you. The Medicine Bag is a book that raises the problem of culture.
