Story Review of the Medicine Bag

The short story The Medicine Bag is written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve in 1975, with the main characters a boy called Martin, and his sister Cheryl. The story is about Martin and Cheryl’s Grandpa visiting them. The most important part of the story is when Martin’s grandpa gives him the medicine bag. At first, Martin thinks that the medicine bag is only a tradition, but after his grandpa told him about the tale, he believes that the medicine bag will protect him. There are several themes in this book. The themes are a family’s tradition is extremely important, don’t judge a book by its cover

Respecting family traditions is extremely important and is respect for your own family, which earns self respect. Family traditions are important for the remembrance of childhood, and can create respect for elders, because respecting a tradition is almost completely equivalent to respecting the people who do it the best. Family traditions are also important for better understanding the history of the family a person lives in. It can also enrich a person’s lifestyle in ways that are unique to others, since there is a very slim chance for others to also have the exact same traditions, and is highly unlikely for them to copy another person’s just because they think it is funny. A unique family tradition also clarifies a person’s uniqueness and identity. In the story The Medicine Bag, Martin never knew about Iron Shell, the legend, and the medicine bag being able to protect him. This is crucial because currently, he isn't fully understanding the concept of his family tradition. But after he knows about the legend, about Iron Shell, and about how his grandpa’s son died in a war without the medicine bag, he was more prepared to embrace the fact that he will obtain the medicine bag, and is fully believing in the fact that he will be protected by it, and he should do whatever he should do to where the medicine bag.

A person should never judge a person by its looks or judge a book by its cover. A first impression of someone is almost always incorrect. But judging a person before even interacting with him is almost always something wrong to do. Unless they have a famous reputation, then you barely know them. A person could look ugly, but is actually extremely smart. A person could look great, but is secretly terrible. There is even an effect called the Halo effect. This effect shows that according to human psychology, a person would give another person higher scores if he looks extremely good, and will give a person lower scores if he looks bad, even when both of their scores should be equal. In the story of The Medicine Bag, Martin and Cheryl were embarrassed by their Grandpa’s looks. However, their friends liked his grandpa because their grandpa looks silly and funny, which will give them the impression that Sioux are naturally funny, and nice. However, grandpa’s actual nature is far from silly. He is here to give Martin the medicine bag, not just to play some jokes with kids. He is also very serious because the medicine bag is a very serious thing to pass on.

A person should learn from the wise people who are their elders. The elders are usually portrayed with a wise image. The fact that they are wise is true. This is probably because old people are very experienced and know a lot about the world. They also know and even experienced some things we can never experience, like a war. It is important to cherish our time with elders so we can learn from their wiseness things that will benefit ourselves, so we can improve and become smarter and more intelligent. This is important because interacting with elders will make them active too, and giving elders company also makes them happy. In the story The Medicine Bag, Grandpa likes company, and is very wise. The only problem is that he is a little tired. He thinks that he is going to die and will pass it down to Martin. Martin learnt the legend, and knew that it was his duty to pass the medicine bag down to the next generation, when he died. Grandpa is also wise to believe that the medicine bag will protect him instead of doing nothing. Which is why he has lived for so long.

In conclusion, the short story called The Medicine Bag was written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve in 1975. It is about Martin, his sister Cheryl meeting with their grandfather and Martin inheriting the medicine bag. This novel has important themes. A person should never judge a person by their looks, respecting family traditions is important and earns self respect, and learns from elders or old people because they are wise, and are in need of company. These themes are the most important part of the story, and is the message the author wants to pass down.
