Story Review of The Cricket In Times Square

The story, Cricket in Times Square, written by Garth Williams, talks about a Cricket named Chester who lived in Connecticut and soon, by accident, went into New York City. One day, Chester was resting on his stump and smelled liverwurst. He followed the smell and got into a picnic basket, from where he then was squished by bags and also took faraway and a place which he has never been - New York City. There he met a very friendly mouse called Tucker Mouse, and Harry Cat. They were helpful friends who wanted Chester to live in the busy life of NYC, becoming a trio, but they also thought it would be good if Chester went back to Connecticut.

Being an easygoing friend can make everyone who engages with us smile. Being agreeable can make people around us turn better and make less controlled faults. We can also make more friends and stop loneliness. There is very little chance that we can be famous and inspire lots of people from all around the world, but we should just start small and be polite to everyone in our community or town. In the story, Tucker Mouse is very friendly to everyone, and welcomed Chester very nicely when he came. Tucker is a mouse who is a very warm mouse who likes sharing. In addition, he is friends with an animal who we might think is not possible to be friends with a mouse - Harry Cat. Being sympathetic and heart-warming can inspire people to be the better version of themselves.

Being different doesn't mean that people cannot be friends. In the 80th century, some scientist tested a group of African American children with two dolls. One had black skin, and one had white skin. The scientists asked which doll is ugly, and the children answered that the black skinned doll was ugly. Many African American children had self-hatred, thinking that people who have white skin are on a higher rank than them and also not thinking about being friends with them. But the truth is, everyone can be friends. Tucker and Harry are cat and mice, which are thought to be enemies by so many people. But they are actually best friends who care for each other. Even though in both the country and in many folk tales mice and cats are hard opponents, they can actually be friends and help each other in survival and also learn more about the world they live in. Difference does not mean that they cannot be friends at all.

Being alone and in a place where we have never been before, even one familiar thing helps ease our minds. Chester feels uncomfortable in a new place where he has never been, and homesick too, as most people would feel. In the story, Chester had to take a moment to get used to the bright lights of the city, and when he looks up and sees the star he used to look at from his hometown, he remembers it and thinks about being back home, the countryside of Connecticut, on his little tree stump. When he looks at the star, he feels a little bit better being out alone in a place where he has never been before, as it is connected to Connecticut. The star is an extended metaphor, giving Chester some connections to Connecticut. Homesickness sometimes comes when people leave their hometown, and something that connects with their country will make them feel better.

In conclusion, the story Cricket in Times Square talks about Chester Cricket’s first time in New York City, leaving his beloved hometown. He comes to the city for the first time, and finds friends who are very nice to him. He talks about his adventure and then goes on to talk with Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat. He is scared, being all alone is a place where he has never been before. Only one thing, the star he usually sees from home, is comfort to him. I really recommend this story as it helps us stop for a moment to truly appreciate how happy we are, being with our family.
