Story Review of the Beatrice’s Goat

The Beatrice’s Goat is a realistic fiction written by Page McBrier. It tells about a young girl named Beatrice in Uganda longing to be a schoolgirl. Unfortunately, her family could not afford the money and she had to take care of her younger siblings. Whenever she passed the village school, she would look envied. Luckily, it all changed when some kind families donated a goat to them. Instead of eating the goat, she milked the goat Mugisia and sold it to other people. With her help, she had enough money to go to school. At the ending of the story, Beatrice kissed Mugisia and went to school happily.

It is possible to lift poverty if we are given the right tools. Poverty is a serious socioeconomic problem faced by millions of people on the whole planet, which is also the same situation described in the story. It illustrates Beatrice turning her gift into a profit by milking the goat and producing more lambs to accumulate her fortune. Instead of waiting for help, under-priveleged people could make a significant difference by using a sustainable mindset to maximize the utilization of what is given. Therefore, we should take proactive actions and find appropriate ways of using available resources to resolve the basic need of living.

Quality education is a way to improve the standard of living. After solving the basic needs, everyone also deserves the right to receive education, but this is sometimes a luxury for some places, like Beatrice in the story who longed to be a schoolgirl, but wasn’t able to afford the cost. With her hard work, she earned her opportunity to receive proper education. In turn, everyone will be better developed with the knowledge they gained. We often take education for granted and neglect the rights to education that are not easy to come by. Therefore, we should cherish the opportunities to learn new things.

Our world could benefit more from kindness and support from each other. Kindness is a selfless quality in a person to help others. It is like an unseen mirror helping people in need, and lights up our hearts. It was the generous gift of someone that helped Beatrice’s family out of poverty and eventually helped Beatrice reach her goal of being a school girl. Acts of kindness can often have meaningful ripple effects in our society. It acts like a boomerang and you can always expect it to return and inspire more people. Therefore, it is essential to cultivate a community that appreciates kindness and values the support and giving back to those people in need.

In conclusion, I think the author of Beatrice’s Goat beautifully recounts the story about how a little girl managed to lift her family out of poverty and realize her dream of attending school in a small Ugandan village based on a true story. To live a better life for someone like Beatrice, it is vital to maximize the use of what is given. More importantly, one should cherish the opportunities of education, and appreciate kindness and giving back to society, which may in turn change others lives.
