Story Review of Stone Soup

Characters: Hok, Lok, Siew, Villagers

Setting: Village

Plot: The villagers do not know happiness. So, the monks taught them how to make stone soup.

The story “stone soup” talks about three monks: Hok, Lok, and Siew. Hok asked Siew what makes one happy. In order to answer that question, Siew took Hok and Lok to a village. The villagers do not know happiness. They don't really trust strangers. So, Siew said they will teach the villagers how to make stone soup. They found sticks. And brought a pot. A girl started helping the monks. And one by one, the villagers started peeking out of their windows with curiosity. Then, they started giving ingredients to make the soup even richer. They threw a feast. And at the end, the villagers knew what happiness is.


Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. Happiness is like kindness. With the happiness in your body, you could eventually achieve your goals and go after things in your life you have always dreamed of. In the story, the monks taught the untrustworthy villagers how to make stone soup in order to teach them what happiness is. Sharing and communication practices such cooperation bring about happiness and thus should be seen as ethical. Everyone should feel happy.


Helping others is the hallmark of humanity. Helping each other is actually helping yourself. Others would feel happy, and you also would feel proud. In the story, the monks feel bad because of the villagers not knowing what happiness is and don’t have fun with life. So, they helped them by using an interesting way to teach them how to share, trust, and feel happiness. And the villagers rewarded the monks with a banquet, stories, songs, and comfortable places to sleep. Sometimes helping may lead to gifts. So, help the poor souls that need help.


Giving gifts to others is better than receiving. People should give, because it makes happiness in your heart get richer and richer. You begin to feel happier and happier. In the story, the monks want the villagers to feel happy every day. So, they taught them what happiness means, by making stone soup. As each person opened their heart to give, the next person gave even more! And as this happened, the soup grew richer, which means their happiness grew richer! Giving and sharing could bring more happiness. And it would spread along. Everyone should share and build happiness.


This story tells us three things: Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment, helping others is the hallmark of humanity, and Giving gifts to others is better than receiving. The monks knew that the villagers were not happy, so they decided to help them feel happy, graceful, thankful, peaceful, and delighted. So by teaching them how to make stone soup, they knew what happiness is and shared it among each other.
