Story Review of Shell

Shell, written by Cynthia Rylan, talks about a boy named Michael and how he faces a new life living with his aunt. This creature is a hermit crab, which the stepson Michael brings home one day. Aunt Esther, the stepmother, first did not seem so enthusiastic about Michael bringing home a living animal, but soon her attitude began to change. She seemed interested in hermit crabs ever since Michael brought them home. Soon, every day Michael comes home from school, Aunt Esther is there looking at the creature. Michael didn’t think much of it until she took him to the pet store and bought 20 hermit crabs. He was so surprised then, that he was extremely embarrassed too and tried to pretend he didn’t know Aunt Esther. Aunt Esther knew that Michael was sad about his parent’s death and tries to comfort him. Soon, they found out that they did not detest each other, and both had the same likes, hermit crabs. Michael thought Aunt Esther was interesting. and Aunt Esther learned to like things her stepson liked, too. Michael understood how hard Aunt Esther was trying to become a good stepmother to Michael, and he learned to be a good son too. The hermit crab that Michael brought home solved many problems between Aunt Esther and Michael. Sometimes a miracle could happen, even when you are under great stress and uncertain.

The relationship between people is not a continuous layer, bad relationships, and problems, perhaps only need a chance to change. This shows the relationship and troubles that they have to face. Michael first disliked aunt Esther because he thought she was annoying and boring. But when the hermit crab came home they realized they have much more in common than they realized. Aunt Esther at first didn’t seem to be so enthusiastic about Michael bringing back a sea creature but soon she became addicted to it. Michael had missed his parents after their death so much, that he could almost see them when he came back from school and this is why his attitude got out of control in the story. Aunt Esther also knew Michael’s pain in the loss of the most important members of the family, so she adopted him. This change of attitude is shown in this story so that readers can understand the relationship between Aunt Esther and Michael and how they both understand each other in the end. Aunt Esther knew that Michael was sad about his parent’s death and tried to control her attitude. Michael and Aunt Esther changed their attitudes towards each other and due to that, they improved their relationship and knowledge of each other. When you are in a difficult state, it is important to see if your attitude can be changed.

The hermit crab that Michael brought home shows a symbolism of many things, hermit crabs can show the symbolism of alone-time and reunion. This is exactly what Michael and Aunt Esther needed to reunite in their relationship. Ever since Michael brought home the creature, their lives changed and their attitude toward each other had been different. Aunt Esther realized her mistake of treating him the wrong way and Michael understood that he did not dislike Aunt Esther at all, now that he knew her personality. The hermit crab had been very useful, though no one noticed, because after Aunt Esther bought 20 hermit crabs, her life with Michael had changed a lot. They learned a lot from each other and also became more respectful. The hermit crab showed many important values in life and also reunited the relationship between Aunt Esther and Michael. to each other as well as caring for their new pet. A humble hermit crab has changed its relationship with its owner by a lot. The hermit crab represents reunion with family and changes over time, and this proves why everything changed when the symbolisms of the hermit crab were bought and changed everyone's life. Michael and Aunt Esther did not realize that the crab was more to their family than just a hermit crab. The symbolism of the hermit crab shows that everything will change and reunite tina in a matter of time.

Understanding each other is the key to breaking the ice. Breaking the ice is making a start to stop the silence, make up, and forgive each other. Aunt Esther understood Michael's pain in losing his parents, and Michael understood that his Aunt was just trying to raise him the best she could. Since they understand each other, forgiving each other was easier too. It is important to take the first step and do something nice or encouraging to break the ice after an argument or fight. This is what Aunt Esther did, she tried to soothe Michael’s pain and anger by buying hermit crabs for him. This worked, as things all worked out after. The two people understand each other's pain and desire and that made them change throughout the story. Even if you break the ice, it doesn’t mean that things will always be better. You need to take another step, which is understanding why the other person is in pain, anger, or any other mood. If you don’t, things will never change if you don’t do something to help it. Once you understand someone and the way they are feeling, it is easier to solve the problem. Michael and Aunt Esther solved their fight by buying hermit crabs and understanding their desire and pain..

This story tells us the difficult problems that Michael and Aunt Esther had to face while living with each other. These problems include difficulty understanding each other and fights. Michael brought home a hermit crab to soothe his feelings and mood, and before he knew it Aunt Esther had become addicted to his pet. He was very surprised and embarrassed when she took him to the pet shop and purchased 20 family members for Sluggo, the hermit crab. Soon Aunt Esther’s mood was much better than before, and Michael tried to, too. But she mentioned his parents, who had passed away, and his mood dropped again. Soon Aunt Esther understood Michael and his eyes that were full of pain, and they were both happy in the ned with their 21 hermit crabs. Every since Sluggo went home, Michael’s family situation had been solved one by one. The hermit crab is a strong symbol of reunion and forgiveness and when it came to a home with those problems it knew what to do. Michael and Aunt Esther both share the acknowledgment that they all make mistakes and will always forgive each other they understand each other right. Everyone makes mistakes, but if you understand them, you should forgive them and give them a chance. People sometimes just need a companion that can soothe their minds to change.
