Story Review of Seven Spools of Thread

Characters: An old man and his seven Sons

Setting: In a small African village

Plot: They argued

Genre: Fable

The story <Seven Spools of Thread> written by Angela Shelf Medearis and illustrated by Daniel Minter, talks about seven brothers who constantly argue and fight with each other. Upon their father's death, they are given a task to turn seven spools of thread into gold if they want to inherit his wealth. Working together and utilizing each brother's unique skill, they succeed and learn the value of cooperation and teamwork. At the end of the story, seven brothers teach the poor people in the village how to turn thread into gold.

Teamwork is what gets things done faster and better, cooperation can accomplish impossible tasks. Like the old saying goes, there's strength in numbers. In the story, each son is given not enough thread, if they work alone, the mission will fail. When they work together, they make cloth out of thread and sell it, they learn teamwork. In real life, everyone has their own advantages and disadvantages, and working together can make things better, like flying cars, recycled rockets and chatGPT. Just like the African Proverb in the story said “Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable”.

Selfless sharing is a better virtue, it can make us gain more friends, and make more things better. Sharing is what we atleast have for friendships. In the story, the seven brothers have a very good idea to make money, and they share the idea with the poor people in the village, it can make life better for every of them. In real life, sharing can be from anyone, they can be friends, classmates or someone who maybe will be our friends, etc. And we can share anything, a good mood, a good idea or a good skill. However, sharing lets us make more friends and get more sharing from others.

A good sense of beauty can make our life more beautiful, and give us more opportunities to work. Even if we have good character but not good aesthetic, we can’t make things perfect. In the story, the seven brothers have a good aesthetic so they can make beautiful cloth for gold, not just money. In real life, our aesthetic is also important, it can make us know the beauty of everything and let us not just appreciate the things that's only around us. Aesthetics is what we get first from nature.

In conclusion, this story tells a story about how the seven brothers go from argued about each other to turning threads into gold together. I learn so much from this story. Firstly, working together is better than working just by oneself. Secondly, it is a better virtue to help others. Last but not the least, a good aesthetic can make things better. Fables, fairy tales and fiction stories make our first opinion of the world and they are also useful when we are older. I highly recommend this story to you, and I hope you would like it.
