Story Review of Raymond's Run

Raymond’s Run is a realistic fiction book written by Toni Cade Bambara. Hazel is a very athletic runner. Raymond, Hazel’s brother, has to be looked after by Hazel because he has something not quite right with him. Hazel has an important track meet coming up and is practicing. Gretchen, an old friend, disrupts her with her friend Mary. They tell Hazel that she would lose this year. Then, they try to mock Raymond, but Hazel defends him. She would always defend Raymond no matter what happens. On the day of the meet, she was on the starting line after all the kids finished. She thought of herself as a cloud. When the race started, she zoomed past every other kid. Gretchen was behind her and when Hazel looked to the field she almost stopped to see her brother running the first time of his life. Luckily, Hazel won, but Hazel and Gretchen smiled at each other.

Accepting others that are different from you and the norm is important in life. In the story, Raymond’s Run, people would make fun of Raymond because he had a disability. At the start of this story,  Grentchen tried to mock Raymond, but was rejected by Hazel, as always. Hazel would try to protect Raymond as best as she could. Raymond has been bullied a lot in the past because of his disability. Also, Hazel got discriminated against by other kids because she was an African American. Many people that were African American have gotten discriminated against in the past of America. They had less rights than the Americans and had been held back in America. Raymond's Run clearly states how horrible discrimination was in the past history. Without bullying others that are different from the majority, the world would have more love and respect.

Your reputation to other people is very important for people in the world. In this story, Hazel and Gretchen are both competing to try to win the race. The reputation of Hazel is very important to Hazel. Hazel has won many races the past years of her life. Hazel also has been practicing for the race for a lot of time in the stary, meaning that it is very important to herself and that she wants to win, she tries to get her leg as strong as possible and ready to win the race. People’s reputation is important in the world. Once people do something wrong that doesn’t match their reputation, they would most likely lose their reputation and have a different one. For example, if Hazel had lost to Gretchen, Hazel would most likely not be considered the fastest person in the story.

Competition is very big in the world of trying to prove themselves and with reputation. In the Raymond's Run people try to gain their reputations by competing against each other. Competing with others not only shows off your skill but helps you gain more respect from others around you. In order to become the best and try to be better than others, people will have to have resilience and practice. Hazel has been practicing herself for the competition for a long time, leading her to win the race. Winning in a sport can show off how much you have tried and how much effort you have put into something. Everything needs practice to become better. Sometimes, people try to act like they are the best by trying to pretend to use no effort and only talent. This is usually called pretended talent. Competitions in sports can show many traits of yourself and the people around you.

Maturity happens in every person’s life and is always the most important and biggest change that humans make as they grow up. As shown in the short story, Raymond’s Run, at the start of the story Hazel tries to win. The only thing that she had cared about was winning the race and beating Gretchen. She wants to prove herself to others that she is the best runner in the grade and even the school. At the end when she had won the race, Hazel finds that it’s useless to try to win again because she already knew that she was good enough. People only need to feel like they are already good and do not need to prove to others that they are better. In the race, Hazel finds out that Raymond is a pretty good runner and wants to coach him. She not only gains more confidence, but also wants to help others to become better. Maturity is the main and the most important difference between adults and children.

The story of Raymond's Run teaches us many lessons and things that happen in life. The short story talks about why accepting others is very important, reputation, the importance of competition, and maturity. Accepting others that are different from the majority of the world will help a lot in order to help us become more peaceful. Reputation is what people in the world have been trying to gain in the world. Competition is a very useful way to gain reputation and show your resilience. Maturity happens throughout the story and changes Hazel completely. Raymond’s Run is an interesting story about a girl trying to gain her reputation in running.
