Story Review of Priscilla and the Wimps

Priscilla and the wimps by Richard Peck takes place at a school where a gang of bullies uses violence to coerce many out of most of the students. The narrator talks about how the gang, called the klutter kobras , with its leader monk klutter, who hand out “passes” that students use to not get bullied. These passes can cost up to a dollar or more depending on the kobras. One day, one of the gang members bullies Melvin, a small student who has a friend named Priscilla, a big in appearance girl. Priscilla stands up to her friend and beats the bully. After that, Priscilla meets monk Klutter and after talking for a while Priscilla acts and eventually shoves him in a locker. The school closes because of snow for a week after that. This book talks about bullying, standing up to bullies for others, and the hidden bully.

Bullying can take different shapes and forms, while there is usually a purpose for the end result. Some ways are like a gang of bullies targeting a person and some reasons for this are maybe for money or just to make others feel bad. In Priscilla and the wimps, The bullies were a gang called the klutter kobras and they harassed the whole by bullying them into giving them money for fake passes that allowed them to do actions that normally, people would be allowed to do. This way is by using force and fear against them and also using the group of people to stop any rebels. The money they made off the entire school was the main motivation for the leader, monk Klutter and their group also helped them to be able to single out kids that they wanted more money from. Bullying can occur through a group targeting an individual or by someone acting alone, and in either case the goal is usually establishing power and control by scaring or upsetting the other person.

People might stand up to a bully for certain people because of personal connection. When normally staying back, these people might act out and help their friends and close on against bullies. Priscilla, a strong in appearance but otherwise lonely girl with just one friend named Melvin, doesn’t really care about other people getting bullied but when her only friend Melvin does, she stands up for him and takes the bullies down. This is because Melvin was her only friend so she didn’t want him to get hurt but also didn’t care about people who weren't her friends like the rest of the school. Melvin didn’t stand up to the other kids mainly because he's small and therefore scared. Fear can stop people from interfering with bigger and stronger bullies like the Klutter Kobras. This shows how people might act when seeing close friends get hurt.

Even though most people don't want to get involved when someone is being bullied, if it's one of your close friends, your caring for them could give you the courage to stand up for them with others, so the bully learns they can't hurt people without a response and your friend feels not so alone.

Even though it might not show on the outside, some people may experience a hidden bully only shown in certain situations. These people bully others even if it's not that obvious and both the victim and the bully are in different situations. Priscilla is lonely and a big girl, this is why everyone doesn’t play with her and her only friend is Marvin, a small boy. This hidden bully makes Priscilla feel lonely because of the way she looks, not for any other reason, this is unfair. Marvin is in a similar situation, he is small so others see him as not worthy to play with. Even though not verbal or physical the damage is still quite obvious. Not only that, the bullies are also not that obvious to spot which turns them into hidden bullies Hidden bullies are not easy to spot but nevertheless, they still bully people and make them feel bad which is always wrong, as no one deserves to experience unkindness or suffer emotional harm.

Priscilla and the wimps by Richard Peck is a very amusing book about a girl who shows her inner personality when her friend gets bullied. This book teaches us about bullies, standing up to a bully for others, and hidden bullies. Bullies seek different motivations for their harassment like money, joy at embarrassing others, and popularity. Other people might stand up to these bullies because they realize it is wrong but in this book it's because one of the characters' friends was getting harassed so she had to stand up for him. This gives us an idea of what a hidden bully can seem like or be while others don’t realize it, there are lots of different types of bullies that just aren't as obvious as others. The author shows that no one deserves to be bullied.
