The story "One Riddle, One Answer," written by Lauren Thompson, talks about a princess named Aziza who posted a riddle to find a husband; whoever answered it correctly would marry her. Princess Aziza was a smart girl; it was not long before she needed a husband, the the king’s advisers only recommended their own son, so the king was angry. Aziza had an idea, she loves riddles, so she posted a riddle, although her father wasn’t sure, he sent the riddle out for people to solve. Many men tried but failed. But one man, named Ahmed, found the answer, it was the number ‘1’.
When some people get a chance to gain something really good, they only think of themselves; these people are selfish. When selfish people see a chance to get what they want, they will do whatever it takes. They only care about themselves and the valuable things they want instead of helping others and sharing. In the story, the advisers only recommend their sons. The advisers are really smart. They saw their chance to take over the throne. Selfish people always find a way, but these advisers didn’t succeed, they showed too openly. Everyone can immediately see that they are greedy for power. Selfishness might be clever, but it often leads to trouble.
Negative people always think of the bad result; they don’t believe that anything can be good, while positive people always believe that everything will turn out great, positive people are always assertive. The self-confidence of the people makes them look strong and fearless; it’ll attract friends. But when people look scared and always think that everything they do is wrong, only people who pity them will play with them. In the story, Princess Aziza is very confident that someone will give the right answer to her riddle, while her father isn’t sure. When the king finds the riddle difficult, he says the princess will never have a husband, he thinks that the riddles will never be solved, but the princess has hope and is very confident, she is positive, while Sulton is doubtful, he is negative. Being positive and always having hope may lead people to a better future.
People need to jump out of the box in order to broaden their horizons and minds and to understand more than just what people have in life. If people don’t open their minds, they will only stay in their comfort zone. They will only understand what is familiar to them. The familiar zones are limited, but everything outside the comfort zone is unlimited. Knowledge goes on forever. In the story, the astronomer answers the sun, the soldier answers the sword, and the merchant answers money. Their answers are all due to their careers. They only study what they are used to and what they like. They only stick to their hobbies, but what they should truly do is look at Princess Aziz’s hobbies, Aziza doesn’t like any of the wrong answers. People should open their minds and not just stick to what they usually do. They should look around the world wildly. Answers are everywhere.
