Story Review of One Riddle and One Answer

Basic elements:

Characters: Aziza

Setting: Long ago, in Persia

Plot: The sultan cannot find a suitable husband for Aziza.

Genre: Fairy tale

The fairy tale “One Riddle” written by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Linda S. Wingerter talks about long ago in Persia, there was a girl named Aziza who was the Sultan’s daughter. Aziza also liked math and riddles. But her father, the sultan, couldn't find a suitable husband for her and his advisors just recommended their sons, because they wanted to get the benefit. Luckily, Aziza thought of the idea of posing a riddle and her father agreed. Many people had wrong answers, but a farmer named Ahmed had the right answer and he got married to Aziza.

Firstly, I learned that when there is a benefit, people want to get it. They think that it is their turn to get the benefit and they just think of themselves, this shows their selfishness. In the story, the sultan’s advisors wanted to get the benefit of marrying their sons with Aziza. They just thought of themselves and didn’t find a suitable husband for Aziza. So, when there is a benefit, people become selfish and don’t think of others.

Secondly, I learned that some people are pessimistic, while some people are optimistic. Some people expect bad things to happen or something to be not successful, but others expect good things to happen or something to be successful. On the other hand, we should be optimistic, not pessimistic, but we should not be too optimistic. In the story, the sultan thought that there would be no man who could solve Aziza’s riddle, but Aziza thought that there would be one. This showed that the sultan was pessimistic and that Aziza was optimistic. So, being pessimistic is bad but we also should not be too optimistic.

Last but not least, I learned that when thinking of something, people should jump out of their area of thinking and grasp new knowledge. People just accept or use what they have learned, they want to stay at their current level and don’t want to learn new things. But if they don’t learn new things, they will not improve. In the story, the astronomer, the soldier, and the merchant didn’t jump out of their area of thinking and accept new knowledge when they were thinking of the answer to the riddle that Aziza posed. They just gave the answers within their knowledge. So, if people want to improve, they should learn new knowledge.

This story tells of a girl named Aziza who solved the problem of not finding a suitable husband for her by posing a riddle. In the end, a farmer named Ahmed solved her riddle and got married to her. This story teaches people that people become selfish when there is a benefit, being pessimistic is not good, and people shouldn’t just stay at their current level. This is a truly meaningful story.
