The story My name is Yoon written by Helen Recorvits talks about a girl from Korea but now in America. In America it’s all different, so she doesn’t like America, but at last she thinks maybe America is good, too. In the story, Yoon doesn’t like her English name so at school she writes CAT, BIRD, and CUPCAKE instead of Yoon, but at last she writes Yoon. Yoon doesn’t like the difference, so that’s why Yoon doesn’t write her English name at the first time. With the time goes, Yoon thinks that maybe America is also good, because she has friends and she is the teacher’s favorite. Difference is hard to understand, but try to make it fun.
Be positive and do something. If you are not happy, try to improve yourself. In the story, Yoon feels bad but she tries to improve her life in America. She wants the teacher to like her because no one likes her. I think she can try to talk to her classmates to make new friends. It is also a better way to improve her life in America. If you have a problem, be brave and try your best to solve it.
If you have a problem, don’t retreat it. Having a problem is not scary, we are afraid that you don’t face it. In the story, Yoon is getting to know why she doesn’t like America, because she doesn’t have any company and she is lonely. So she wants to be the teacher’s favorite, and she improves herself. Yoon has a problem, but she tries to solve it instead of cowering. From this passage, I know that a problem can always be solved, but first you need a strong mind that eagerly wants to solve a problem.
Maybe different is good, too. If you are in a new place or country just try to fit in. In the story, Yoon is from Korea but now she is in America. In America it’s all different, so she changes to be the teacher’s favorite and has many friends. So she thinks maybe America is good, too. I think Yoon is a girl that can defeat the difficulty. Difference stands for change, so all you need to do is to match with them.
Good things take time. If you don’t have any friends, all you need to do is to wait, someone will get up close to you. In the story, Yoon is lonely so she waits, and at recess time the ponytail girl had become Yoon’s friend. Yoon uses a great way to make friends, because every child wants a company. So not only speaking can make friends, waiting can also make friends.
New places, new lives. You will face differences, new things, and loneliness. In the story, Yoon lastly thinks America is good, too. Every time people go to a new place, their first think is this place is bad. I want to go home, but if you use your experiences of hometown in a new place, you will know that maybe this place is also good. When you are in new places or countries just be yourself, you can make this place better.
