Story Review of My Name is Yoon

Characters: Yoon, Yoon’s family, Yoon’s teacher and classmate

Setting: Yoon's home in the United States.

Plot: Yoon doesn’t like her English name.She doesn’t like America, Korea is better. She is lonely, she has no friends. But in the end, she thinks that America will be a good home.

Perspective: Third- person viewpoint.

Genre: Fiction

This story is written by Helen Recorvits. It talks about a little girl named Yoon. She came from Korea and now she lives in America. She didn’t like English and America. She wants to go back to Korea. In class, she writes CAT as her name. She wants to be a CAT! One day, she sees a bird and feels the bird is alone. He doesn't have friends. Just like her. Then she gave the teacher the little robin drawing. The teacher smiled. That means the teacher likes her .Her classmate , a girl, gives her a cupcake. It means the girl likes Yoon and wants to be friends with Yoon. Now, she can sing in English and likes America. America will be a good home, maybe different is good. Her mother said Yoon makes them so proud.

Living in different countries has many differences，and what we have to do is to adapt to it in order to live better here. For example, First, in America we don’t eat dumplings, but I like them. In China we eat it a lot. Second, In America we have a lot of parks to play outdoor activities. In China we don't have a lot of parks but we have a lot of buildings. Third, We could see a lot of people from different countries in America. Fourth, There are many railways in China, but in America we don’t. So different countries have different cultures, let us respect these differences.

When we get into a new environment, we should learn the new language first and then we will get used to it. We also have to find friends that help you take care of yourself and ask questions if you don’t know it .Go to community and school activities. Like skiing, the library, and swimming class. Just like Yoon in the story My Name is Yoon. Yoon must be patient with everyone, including herself. To make the teacher like her and to make friends. I believe that by doing this, we can quickly enter a new environment.

When a new person comes, how are we gonna help and how to welcome newcomers ? I think we should help them and make them feel warm. For example, we help them into their new community and share information about your community and local services to introduce newcomers to others. Just like the teacher in the story gave yoon more smiles and the classmates befriended her and gave her cupcakes. Let them adapt to the new environment as soon as possible.

In conclusion, in the story My Name is Yoon, Yoon moved into a new country. She was very shy at first, so she had no friends, she was lonely, she didn't like America and English, and she wanted to go back to Korea. But later she was patient with everyone, including herself. She makes the teacher like her and makes friends with classmates. She began to like everything about America. I learned that we should be brave and make friends when we are in a new environment. Maybe a new place is better.
