Story Review of My Name is Yoon

Character: Yoon, Father, Mother, Teacher, Students

Setting(When & Where): America

Plot: Yoon does not like her English name Yoon

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Perspective: First-person Viewpoint

The Story My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits is about a girl named Yoon. Her family moved from Korea to America when she was an elementary school student. Her Dad taught her how to write her name in English but she didn’t like it. When the teacher taught her the word CAT, she wrote CAT as her name instead of Yoon. Then she learned the word BIRD, and she used it as her name. Later, she used the word CUPCAKE as her name. Soon, Yoon realized her problem was that she was lonely. So she drew a picture of a bird for the teacher and she made friends with the ponytail girl.

There are many things we can learn from this story. First, everyone should be positive because being positive is good. If you are stuck on something, being positive might help you find a solution. In the story, after the first day of school, Yoon was unhappy but she was positive. When she saw a bird, she decided to draw a picture for the teacher. The teacher would like her and she was happy. Yoon tried to be positive to do something to get out of her trouble, and she made it. Even though she didn’t succeed this time, as long as she keeps trying, she will succeed. So being positive and trying to figure out a way to solve your problem will help you when you are stuck on something.

Second, when you have some trouble, you should find the problem, and try to solve it. When facing the difficulty, some people will run away but some will try to find a solution. In the story, Yoon finally realized that the reason she was unhappy in America was that she was lonely.  She tried to solve the problem so she drew a picture of a bird to her teacher, hoping that the teacher would like her. Trying to find the problem and solve it instead of complaining will help you get out of your trouble.

Lastly, it’s okay to be different. Being different will not stop you from learning and being better. In the story, Yoon was different from other students because she was from Korea. But this difference didn’t stop Yoon from learning English and making friends. So remember everyone is different in terms of appearances, personalities, languages…, you don’t have to be the same as others.

In the story, Yoon was sad in the beginning but she was positive. She tried to be happy by drawing a picture for the teacher and making new friends and it worked. We can learn that it’s good to be positive and not to give up. Sometimes we feel different from others but it’s okay because everyone is different.
