The story My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits talks about a girl who doesn’t like her English name after her family moves to America. When she went to school, her teacher taught her about the word CAT, and she used it as her English name. After school, she drew a robbin and her Dad told her how to write BIRD. The next day, she used BIRD as her English name. During recess, she made a friend with a ponytail girl. Back at class, she used CUPCAKE as her name. Soon, the teacher liked her more. The next day, she wrote Yoon for her name.
The first thing we can learn from this story is that it’s good to be positive.When people meet problems, some of them are sad and grumpy because they are not positive. If they could try to think in a positive way , their problem might be solved and they would feel happy. In the story, Yonn is not happy and she feels lonely at school when her family moves from Korea to America. Instead of crying there, Yoon tried to make her teacher like her by drawing a picture for the teacher. As you can see, when Yoon had trouble, she had a positive thinking and tried to do something. Therefore, being positive and trying to solve your problem will make you feel a lot better.
Secondly, when you are unhappy or you feel like something is wrong, you should face the difficulty and find the problem. Some people will do nothing and complain, but some will try to find the problem and solve it. In the story, Yoon finally realized that the reason why she did not like America is that she was lonely. Yoon tried to solve the problem, so she drew a picture for the teacher and tried to make friends. Finding the problem and trying to solve it instead of complaining and doing nothing will help you escape from the difficulty.
Lastly, everyone needs a friend. Nobody likes to be lonely and have no friends. In the story, Yoon wanted to go back to Korea because she had no friends in America. She wanted everyone to like her and she tried to have new friends. Friends share things, like a cupcake, a muffin…They can be each company for each other in life. So to most people, having no friends is a bad thing.
Clearly in this story, Yoon was not happy when she moved from Korea to America. But she used a positive attitude and tried some to make new friends and to make the teacher like her more. We can see that it’s important to try to think positive, find the problem, and find the solution. And a friend is always important too.
