Story Review of Mighty Jackie

Ella

In the historical fiction book Mighty Jackie written by Marissa Moss, a young girl Jakie played a baseball game with many other people. It happened in Chattanooga, Tennessee, April 2,1931. It was the New York Yankees, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, versus Chattanooga Lookouts, with Jackie in. It seems like a normal game, but it’s not. During that time, women were believed to be not good at sports and weak. In the game, nobody believed in Jackie, but she showed girls can be strong too. In the game, her wonderful job and win of the game changed many people’s views of women and made a difference to what people thought.

Jakie’s success is inseparable from her determination, hard work, and perseverance. When she was young, she had the determination to become a good sport. She bears the heavy responsibility of breaking gender inequality on her shoulders. When she practiced, many people laughed and insulted her, but she never gave up. She gave in more effort than anyone else, believed in herself, and practiced over time, and was returned by winning the game. The win is not only winning the game, but the result of her hard work.

Words should never be made to judge people. At that time, people’s beliefs on gender inequality made “female sports” seem like a joke to insult women. In most people’s minds, women are weak, so the word “female sports” is an insult. When Jakie was small, people said she played like a girl, and when she went to play, everyone didn’t look at her strength, but her gender. Women should be trusted to play a good game, not to be laughed at. Jakie standing on the field is a way of breaking gender inequality and discrimination. Gender should not be the standard of judging people, and the word “female sports" should never lock the fairness of people.

This game is one of many events that can reflect the unfairness of female rights. People’s thought of women in this story is that females are weak, and it led to some unfair rights, like females should not do sports. Except this, there are many other unfair thoughts about women, like they need to help men and do chores. These thoughts never gave women the rights they should have and controlled their freedom. Jakie’s win brought back many rights for females and gave them a better life. Although these rights should already exist, Jakie’s actions proved women have the ability to have their rights.

In all, the book mighty Jakie is a historical fiction book that reflects the true things that happened to women. Mighty Jakie used her hard work and perseverance to bring back the rights for women and changed many people’s thinking. She won other people’s respect, equalness in people, and women’s rights. Her determination, effort, and courage is what she needs to prove her ability to others. All people should treat others fairly and respect. The win of the game is a very good start to change people’s views and let the world have no more inequality.
