Genre: Fantasy

The story <Mice and Beans> written by Pam Muñoz Ryan, illustrated by Joe Cepeda, talks about Rosa Maria‘s youngest grandchild, Little Catalina, would be seven years old, and the family would go into Rosa Maria’s casita for the party, she has a week to prepare for it. She prepares everything the birthday party needs. But the mouse trap is gone every day. On the last day Rosa Maria has forgotten to fill the piñata, the mice help her fill it. In the end Rosa Maria gave mice some food and a home.

Everyone can help others, even strangers and weak ones. Helping others is a kind of virtue. It can not only help others solve problems, but also make ourselves more confident. In our cognition, the strong are the subjects dominating the world, they dominate the world, and the weak are usually the bottom of the world, and are in need of help, but they are not. In the story, the house’s owner Rosa Maria has forgotten to fill the piñata, the mice help her fill it. The mice are weak, but they help Rosa Maria, they are helpful. We can't look at things one-sidedly, the weak should also be brave to help others. Weak can also give light, they should help the strong and have confidence in themselves.

We should be grateful to others when others help us, when we express our thanks, the other person will be happy, and the well meaning person will get more help. It is not easy to help others, so we should express our thanks to others when we get help. In the beginning of the story, Rosa Maria hates mice, she wants to use mousetrap to catch them. But because the mouse helped her, she gave the mice food. Little Catalina’s birthday party is done well, mouse trap is never used again, they are all happy. Being grateful is really important! It means we are happy for the things we have. When we feel grateful, we will feel good too!

Some of the unusual things are just from our own standpoint to see, try to understand and accept it, maybe it can change our point of view. Just like each of us has an advantage and disadvantage, things are not the same as what they look like. It is important to accept others so that others will come to help us when we are in trouble. In the story, Rosa Maria hates mice at first, but after mice help her, she accepts the mice to stay in her house to live. They live happily every day together. Things are not the same as what they look like, when there's room in the heart, there's room in the house... even for a mouse. Do not judge a book by its cover. We have to respect and accept different things by living with love and acceptance, we will create a friendlier and better world.

In conclusion, I learn a lot from this story. Firstly, helping others even when we are weak, helps each other to make life better. Secondly, we need to be grateful when others help us, grateful is not only polite. Last but not the least, try to accept the irrational things, perhaps will let us understand more truth. And I also learned writing skills from this story, for example, no repetition and a list of detailed descriptions of actions. In this story, to repeat the actions before the character goes to bed that can make us know how the character is. This is a very lovely story, not only interesting, but also lets me learn to be grateful. I like this story very much and highly recommend it to you. I hope you will like it, too.
