Leaving Ireland behind, a historical fiction, is mainly about the main character, Liam and his mom taking a ship to New York. When they get to New York, they can see Liam’s dad again. As soon as they got into the ship, they saw a lot of people leaving from Ireland because of the potato famine. So they left Ireland and hoped for a better life in America. Liam’s dad already lived there. He lived in a small house and worked in an iron factory with low pay, but he still had a positive attitude and always worked for his best. When they saw Liam’s dad, they were so happy and hugged him.
The Irish Potato famine, also known as “the great hunger”, began in Ireland 1845, is caused by destructive plant disease that spread rapidly throughout Ireland. The infestation ruined up to one-half of the potato crop that year, and about three-quarters of the crop over the next seven years. Due to the heavy reliance on potatoes as a food source by Irish sharecroppers, who were under colonial rule in Great Britain at that time, pests had a catastrophic impact on Ireland and its population. Before it ended in 1852, the Potato Famine resulted in the death of roughly one million Irish from starvation and related causes, with at least another million forced to leave their homeland as refugees.
Immigrants, like dad, sometimes faced hostility from other groups in the U.S., and were accused of spreading disease and blamed for the unsanitary conditions many lived in. Immigrants enter the United States with dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. Some are seeking economic opportunities. Others are fleeing violence, persecution or climate disasters. Many immigrants wanted to move to communities established by previous settlers from their homelands. Once settled, immigrants looked for work. There were never enough jobs, and employers often took advantage of the immigrants. Men were generally paid less than other workers, and women less than men.
