The story Grace for President written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by LeUyen Pham mainly talks about a girl named Grace wants to be the first female president of United States when she finds that all the presidents in the history are men. At the very beginning, her classmates think that it’s impossible. Her teacher Mrs. Barrington held a presidential election at their elementary school. Grace and Thomas Cobb from another class become the two candidates. The other students from Grace class become representatives of 50 stated in the United States. Grace works hard for the campaign. She came up with a campaign slogan and she went to the cafeteria as a volunteer. After school, she made speeches to her supporters and talked about her promises when she is elected. However, the other candidate Thomas did nothing for his campaign because he thinks that he will get enough votes. On the election day, Grace won the final vote because everybody feels her sincerity.

After reading this story, I’ve learned how the president in the United States is voted out. Every country has its own political system. In the United States, two parties take turns to be president. They are the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Each party has to nominate a candidate to run for the presidential election. There are 50 states in the US and each state has a number of electoral votes. All together, there are 538 electoral votes. One has to win over 270 votes to be the president. In the process, candidates should hold a campaign. They give public speeches and make promises to the constituents. Polls were taken. In the story, Grace Campbell and Thomas Cobb both came up with their campaign slogans. In addition, Grace volunteered in school cafeteria and made public speeches after school. Usually, two candidates will take part in debates on TV. Voters will make their final choices on Election Day. Becoming president isn’t going to be easy at all.

From this story, I’ve also learned that girls are as valuable as boys. They are born equal. If a boy can achieve something important, then a girl can achieve something important as well. In the story, Grace Cambell noticed that there was no woman president in the history of United States. She came up with an idea that she wanted to be the first female president when she grows up. In the election held by her teacher Mrs. Barrington, she competed with a very powerful candidate Tomas Cobb. She worked really hard and kept her promise. Finally, she won the election. Thomas is a confident and excellent candidate. He fails because he didn’t work for what he promised in his campaign. When it comes to success, it doesn’t matter if you are a girl or a boy. What really matters is how hard you work for your dreams. Both girls and boys have their potentials on the way to success.

From this story, I’ve also learned that it’s important for females to have the same opportunities as males do in the society. If females cannot get the same opportunities as males do, we will lose many talented people. Sometimes, females can do even better than males in certain fields. Females can be more patient. In addition, they can provide different perspectives to view the same issue. In the story, Grace Cambell noticed the problem of no woman president in the history. And she decided to make a history when she grows up. She is brave and confident. What she does will set an example for other girls. She will be an inspiration to many people who are working hard for their dreams. If females can play the same important roles as males usually do, they will make the same or even more contribution to the society.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic book. The story gives us many detailed information about presidential elections in the United States. It’s useful for our further learning about America. Also, the main character Grace let us know girls can be as valuable as boys when they are working hard for their dream. And it’s important for girls to play important roles in the society as boys. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is working hard for their dreams. You will get great inspiration from Grace Cambell as I do.
