The short story “Geraldine Moore the Poet” is written by Tony Cade Bambara and talks about Geraldine’s sad life of poverty. Geraldine faces many struggles such as her mother being in the hospital, and being evicted from her home. One day, she has to write a poem for school, but she cannot think of anything. When she tells the teacher, the teacher says her words are beautiful. In the story, Geraldine is going through a lot of struggle. She has trouble at home after being evicted, and rarely eating enough without many people helping her. This short work teaches people about making our way through poverty and loneliness, and seeing the beautiful parts of life even when there seem to be none.
Poverty is when you are poor and have no money compared to other people. Poverty can change you because you could lose everything. Geraldine has lost her home from being impoverished. The landlord has set out many of her belongings on the street, and she has to live with Miss Gladys while her mother gets better. She even has to work by dog-sitting twice a week. Even though this is not a lot of work, she is a young child, and she should not have to work at all. Since Geraldine is young, she should not have to worry about what she eats, or where to live. Those worries are meant for the people that take care of her. Unfortunately, she does not have the luxury of that because of her sick mother and absent father. The only person she can rely on is Miss Gladys. Geraldine should be focusing on her schoolwork and having fun playing outside instead of making her own food. Being in poverty has made her grow up too quickly, robbing her of the happy childhood she should have. This depicts how being poor can lead to the loss of your childhood.
Loneliness can be caused by many other events, one of these events is poverty. Geraldine is alone, and always was when she joined this school, not only because people just made fun of her, they had never experienced what she had experienced through her life. Although people did make fun of her, they had just never felt what she did, like how poor she is, and having their own mother away, so really no parent for them to be taken care of. They also had never experienced being hungry every day, and how their sister does not cook them food sometimes even though they should. Also since her mother was away and sick, she was alone without a parent to help her with work, this had made her forget to do work, and started getting bad grades. As well she was alone, because after she had said the poem, one kid was about to laugh at her, but stopped because of the teacher, but it shows that she is bullied throughout the whole school year. Loneliness is a bad cause in life, when you are alone you are afraid. We should never try to be lonely, but have an accepted thought in your mind. When kids are lonely they also face a hard life, they feel sorrowness and pain in their hearts. When kids have never felt what other kids are doing then they might be lonely, and be left behind like Geraldine.
Optimism is when you are always thinking of good things, even though Geraldine is in a bad state, she should try to be more optimistic in things. Even though Geraldine is pessimistic, being on the bad side of things, and thinking bad. From the poem we can see that she is thinking of bad thoughts, but the teacher brings it into a good thought, and says it is a great poem even when it is pessimistic. After everyone congratulated her, she started to be optimistic. Even after thinking of all the debts and how the bill is too much, and she is only getting four dollars a week, she starts being optimistic and forgets all of it. I believe that it is good to be optimistic, because we can accomplish many things if we are optimistic. Like say that you are doing rock climbing, and you are doing something really hard and high, this makes you a little doubtful. But you are being optimistic and you believe in yourself you can finish it, because of your faith. This is why being optimistic is a nice thing to think about, because you may accomplish many goals.
The story “Geraldine Moore the Poet” talks about a sad little girl, Geraldine. It explains that her life is not good, because they are poor and her mother has been in the hospital, and she barely earns money. But once she started being optimistic, she had forgotten those bad thoughts and started believing in herself. Poverty is hard, it can bring you many bad things, like your house being sold, and your furniture being moved out to somewhere else. But she is still motivated to do work, not for food, but for her family, to get money for her mom to be back, and they all can be happy again. Poverty of loneliness is also brought by poverty, this is because people have not been where you have been, and that they do not understand you because you are in a tough situation. But even though poverty is hard, you should still be optimistic because then you can be happy and forget the thoughts that are constantly bugging you. The story “Geraldine Moore the Poet” is a sad story but a good one, talking about many things like poverty, and being optimistic.
