Story Review of Farfallina and Marcel

Character: Farfallina, Marcel.

Setting (When and Where)

Time: in the morning

Place: near the pond.

Plot: Farfallina was eating a small grey bird’s umbrella

Genre: fantasy

Perspective: third-person viewpoint

The fantasy story of Farfallina and Marcel written by Holly Keller talks about Farfallina, a caterpillar, and Marcel, a small grey bird, introducing each other and becoming good friends. On a rainy day in spring, Farfallina met Marcel. They introduced themselves to each other and played hide-and-seek. During the game, Farfallina knew Marcel cannot fly high so he hid under the fern close to the ground. When Farfallina needed to cross the pond, Marcel would let Farfallina ride on his back. One day Farfallina was not herself so she climbed up onto a branch and rested. Marcel watched and waited for Farfallina. But Farfallina did not show up. Marcel was  very worried and terribly lonely. In summer, Farfallina became a butterfly and Marcel became a goose. They introduced themselves to each other again. When Marcel gave Farfallina a ride to cross the pond, they recognized each other. Now they found their friends, and they played hide-and-seek. When Autumn came, Farfallina and Marcel decided to go south together.

Sometimes people lose games to their friends, not because they don’t want to win. Instead, they choose not to win the game. When playing games with friends, it is important to be kind, fair, and take turns to keep the game going. Farfallina the caterpillar and Marcel the small grey bird are playing hide-and-seek. Farfallina hides under a fern close to the ground on purpose. Farfallina knows that Marcel could not climb. People want to be nice to their friends. During the hide-and-seek game, when a seeker takes a long time to find a hider, he will feel bad. So a hider jumps out and says “I am here”. It is not because he is not good at hiding. He just wants to be nice to his friend. Also, people want to play the game again. If the seeker never finds the hider, the game will not end. This means they cannot play the game again. Players will have no fun. In addition, people want to take turns to play. If the seeker always wins and the hider always loses, then they cannot take turns to play another role. It won’t be fair. Everyone wants to take turns to win. This case is not only for the game between friends. Any relationship could have a similar situation.

A friend is someone who is always there for you. He shows his support, great smile, and does whatever things with you. People become friends because they have similar interests and this makes them get along better and longer. Marcel lets Farfallina ride on his back when he needs to cross the pond. When Farfallina says he needs a climb up onto a branch and rests, Marcel watches Farfallina to make sure he is safe and waits for him until he is completely out of her sight. Friends always play with each other almost everyday. During recess time, friends always call each other to the playground to play tag, hide-and-seek, or lego because they have the same interests. They feel happy when they play together. Also, friends always help each other when they need. I am short. When I want to reach a book in the library, my friend uses a little chair to help me get the book. When my friend does not feel well, I carry him to report the teacher. Moreover, friends always show their kindness. People will never say mean words or do mean actions to their friends. Because this will hurt their feelings. Friends will always fill other people’s bucket with kindness, warmth, and support. A friend is not just someone you know at school. Your family members or teachers are also your friends, too.

A beautiful sentence is a long sentence which describes things indirectly with color, action, and the time. When people read a story or a book, people can learn how to write a beautiful sentence by looking at those sentences. One example is “The afternoons grew longer and warmer. Instead of directly telling the readers the season is summer, the author says the afternoons grew longer and warmer. Because the author wants the readers to find it out by themselves. Also, the author wants to make the sentence longer. It is more beautifully described in this way. Another example is The sky was blue and clear the morning she was ready to come out and open her beautiful new wings. This is a beautiful sentence because it is a long sentence. The readers can see the time (the morning), the color (blue), the action (open), and the thing (the beautiful new wings) in one sentence. It gives a detailed description. One more example is “Night came and then morning, but Marcel was not there” and “Night came and then morning, but Farfallina did not come down.” Most of the time we try to avoid repetition. But sometimes it is necessary to do the repetition. The purpose is to emphasize. They have the same anxiety. Marcel was waiting for Farfallina but she never came down. Farfallina was waiting for Marcel but Marcel was not there. It points out that they have the same situation but different time frames. But their feelings of being worried are the same. Indirect description, long sentences, and repetition sentences are viewed as beautiful sentences in a story.

The story, Farfallina and Marcel, is a warm story. It tells me three things. First is about playing a game with friends. Everyone wants to win in the game. But sometimes it is good to lose the game on purpose. We need to be nice, be fair, and take turns to play the game so the game can keep going. Second is about friendship. Everyone needs a friend. Good friends will show kindness to each other. They will have the same interests. They will help and take care of each other no matter what. Third is about writing skills. When I am going to write a homework assignment, I will try to write a long sentence with a lot of details, including action words and describing words.
