Story Review of Farfallina and Marcel

The fiction story “Farfallina and Marcel” written by Holly Keller talks about a caterpillar named Farfallina who meets a goose named Marcel on a rainy morning. They became good friends, they were so good with each other that they cared for each other and played together everyday.

First, I learned that sometimes we lose on purpose in a game. We want to be nice, take turns to win and to make the game easier for the other person. In the story, Farfallina and Marcel were playing hide-and-seek, Farfallina hid in a place where Marcel was able to find her and Marcel hid in a place where Farfallina could find him. They considered the other one’s drawbacks, and made the game easier for each other. They also wanted to take turns to win. So, sometimes we lose because we want to take turns to win and make the game fair, and when the game is fair, we become nice.

Secondly, I learned that good friends are understanding and empathetic. They know what the other wants, and then provide it for them. In the story, Farfallina and Marcel were playing hide-and-seek, Farfallina hid close to the ground, because she knew Marcel couldn’t climb, and Marcel hid behind the tree, because he knew she moved slowly. They understood the other’s disadvantage by observing. Therefore, good friends know what we want and need.

Last but not least, I learned that writing skills are useful in writing. There are two kinds of writing skills, the first one helps the writing become clearer by using detailed descriptions, and the second one is cause and effect, and it uses logical-reasoning to make the writing more logical. In the story, the author doesn’t tell the season directly. She wants to have more descriptions to help us form pictures in our mind. So, writing skills are useful, because they improve the writing and make it become more interesting, realistic, and attractive.

Overall, is an interesting story about a caterpillar named Farfallina who makes friends with a goose named Marcel. They become separated and grown-up, but finally finds each other. This story tells us things about losing in the game, friendship, and the importance of writing skills. This is truly a story about friendship.
