The story Farfallina and Marcel written by Holly Keller talks about the friendship between Farfallina and Marcel. When Farfallina was a caterpillar and Marcel was a gosling, they became good friends. They played together and had a lot of fun. One day, Farfallina climbed up a tree and disappeared, so Marcel waited for her day after day, but she never showed up again. After a long winter, Farfallina became a beautiful butterfly and Marcel became a swan. They at first didn’t recognize each other, but when they introduced themselves, they became best friends again.
It’s good to lose sometimes to your friend in a game. When you lose, your friend wins, so it makes them happy. When they are happy, they will play with you. In the story, Marcel and Farfallina hid in places that the other could find. They both tried to make the other happy so the other would play with him. Losing is making your friend happy, so if you keep winning, you can lose a bit.
Good friends like each other, so they would play and talk with each other. Good friends also like playing the same games and they care about each other and would help each other when they have troubles. In the story, Farfallina and Marcel play hide and seek, both hiding in easy-to-find places. Marcel takes Farfallina on a ride to the pond because he knows Farfallina cannot swim. They get along very well and they care about each other and want each other to be happy. Good friends do good things to each other, and don’t harm and bother each other.
In the story we learn two writing skills. The first one is indirect expression. For example, the sentence: “When the leaves on the trees turn red and gold, they decide to go south.” It is indirecting because it doesn’t tell you the season. It gives you two hints: First, the leaves turn red and gold and they do that in the season of fall. Second, geese fly south in fall to avoid cold weather. The second writing skill is repetition. In the story, an example is “Night came and then morning.” This sentence shows twice and it means Farfallina and Marcel have the same feeling when they are waiting for each other.
The story talks about the friendship between a grey gosling and a pink caterpillar. They remeet after the caterpillar becomes butterfly and the gosling becomes swan. And they are still good friends and they go to the south together. The story shows us what good friendship is. Good friends like each other, like playing together. They care about each other and support each other. When they play games, they would choose to lose sometimes to make their friends happy.
