Story Review of Dear Juno

Plot: Juno got a letter from his grandmother and can’t read it

Genre: realistic fiction


The story Dear Juno written by Soyung Pak talks about a boy getting letters from his grandmother. He couldn’t read but understood it from the pictures and flowers. Juno finds that Grandma has got a new cat and a new garden. Juno decides to write a letter to Grandma too. It doesn’t matter whether Juno knew how to write or not. He drew pictures. Juno received a letter from his grandmother. He decided to draw something for his grandmother. A few months later, she received that his grandmother was coming to visit.  


Family love and connection can go beyond distance. The love and care between family members are not diminished by physical separation; in fact, they can be strengthened through communication and interaction. In the story, Juno lives in the USA and his grandmother lives in Korea. They didn’t live together. But their connections are still strong, they maintain a close relationship through letters and drawings. Bonds can remain strong even when separated by distance.

 Communication can be diverse and creative. Even if you don't know how to write, there are various forms of communication. Such as drawings, and photographs. In the story, Juno doesn’t know how to read. He understands by looking at the flowers and pictures with the note. Even if Juno doesn’t know Korea, he understands and writes back the letter in another way. Understanding and expressing feelings can be achieved in many ways.

Second-generation immigrants learn their own cultural heritage and traditions from Family, especially grandparents. Family plays an important role in bridging the culture of their homeland and the new culture in which their children are growing up. In the story,  Juno's grandmother writes letters in Korean and shares Korean traditions and customs in her letters. Through their letters, Juno learns about his Korean heritage and family traditions. He also learns about his cultural background through these letters and photos. This cultural transmission strengthens family connections and helps Juno understand his roots.

 The story talks about a boy getting letters from his grandmother. He couldn’t read but understood it from the pictures and flowers. And Juno draws some pictures to his grandmother. A few months later, she received that his grandmother was coming to visit.  Family love and connection can overcome the obstacles of distance. People can communicate in many different ways even if they can't read and write. Immigrants learn their cultural heritage from family.
