Story Review of Beatrice’s Goat

Beatrice’s Goat by Page McBrier is a story about a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice’s family was very poor. One day they got a goat. They named this goat, Mugisa. Mugisa had 2 babies soon after she got to Beatrice’s family and started to produce milk. When the baby goat didn’t need milk anymore, Beatrice collected the milk and sold it to make money. After a while, they had saved enough money for Beatrice to go to school and Beatrice started to go to school. Beatrice’s Mama was very hopeful that soon one of the baby goats would grow big enough to get sold, so that they would have money to tear down the old house and build a new one.

Education is very important to get a successful and good life. With more chances of getting educated, you will be likely to have more knowledge. With more knowledge, you will have a better chance to get a good paid job. If you have a good paid job, you will have more chances to live a good life. In this story, once Beatrice’s family had saved enough money, Mama sent Beatrice to school instead of thinking about other things like a warm blanket. Because Beatrice’s mama believed that education is essential. Education is a critical factor to lead to a meaningful life.

To help poor people, instead of giving them money directly, you provide them a way to make money. Giving a person money directly, is a temporary help which will last a limited amount of time. A better way to help poor people is to offer them some methods to make money through their own work. In this story, Beatrice’s family got help by some kind hearted people from far away by getting a goat, not money. So they got some methods to make money by their own hard work, like selling the goat’s milk and raising the baby goat to sell. If you give a poor person money, they will eventually use it up. If you give a poor person some ways to make money, they will be able to keep making money and won’t run out.

Beatrice’s mama told her that “Good things take time”. You have to wait for good things to build up over time. In this story, Beatrice’s family didn’t get the goat instantly. They had to build a shed and plant pastures before they got the goat. Without enough food, Mugisa wouldn’t be able to give birth to two strong baby goats, and produced a lot of milk. Without the shed, Mugisa and her two baby goats wouldn’t be able to rest during the night and grow strong. With Beatrice’s hard work of getting a lot of elephant grass and water, Mugisa produced lots of milk, so that Beatrice could sell it and save up some money. We need to be patient and work hard for the good things to come true.

In this story, I learned that education is very important, with more education, we will get more knowledge and have a better chance to live a good life. To help other people, giving them a way to make money is more effective than giving them money directly. Last but not the least, we need to be patient and keep working hard since good things don’t come instantly.
