Story Review of Babu’s Song

Character: Bernardi and Babu

Setting: Soccer field, home, and market.

Plot: Bernardi is a little boy. He lives with his grandfather, Babu. Babu is a toy maker. Bernardi is out of school because he is poor. One day Babu made a music box. Bernardi sold it to a woman but he was crying.

The story Babu's Song is written by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen. It talks about a little boy and his grandfather. Bernardi likes soccer and he is good at soccer. He wants to go to school but he is poor. He is very close to his grandpa, Babu. Everyday he will tell Babu his soccer stories. Babu is a toy maker. He cannot talk because of the illness. Bernardi saw a soccer ball through the store window. Bernardi wants to buy it but he doesn’t have money. Babu made a music box for Bernardi. It plays Babu’s song. A woman wants to buy the music box. At first, Bernardi says no because he likes it so much. But the woman pays a lot of money, which is enough for the ball in the store. So Bernardi sold the music box. When Bernardi got home, he gave the money to Bubu. Also, he was crying because the music box was a gift from Babu. Babu took the money and walked out the door. When Babu came home, he brought a school uniform to Bernardi.

Education is the most valuable thing in the world. With education, the poor people can change their life into a better life. Bernardi sold the music box for a lot of money and he gave the money to Babu. Babu took the money and brought a school uniform for Bernardi. He also paid the school to let Bernardi learn in school. He did not buy the soccer ball. Going to school is more important than buying a soccer ball. If Bernardi goes to school, he can receive professional training from the school soccer coach. With the training from the coach, Bernardi could become a skillful soccer player or make money by teaching soccer when he graduates from school. Education provides a great opportunity for poor people to learn in school, so their life can be changed in a better way.

It is not a bad thing to live in a poor family. Even though the family is poor, we can still see the relationship among family members is very strong and close to each other. Babu and Bernardi are poor so Bernardi cannot go to school but he has a lot of time to develop his love for soccer. When Bernardi got home, Babu hugged him. Bernardi then tells Babu his soccer stories. Also, Babu will make toys for Bernadi with limited materials. It is true that living without money is not convenient because poor people cannot buy or learn something they want. But when they are sad, they can get comfort from their family members. When they need support, the family members will give them the love they need. People in poor families will not lose their love. Instead, they receive more love because they support each other.

The soccer balls, the school uniform, and the music box are symbolism in this story. Symbolism is the thing that appears repeatedly in the story with a special meaning. In the story, a soccer ball means what Bernardi likes or his hobby. The school uniform represents education because Bernardi wants to learn at school. The music box shows that Babu has hope for life even though he cannot talk. He still sees the beautiful part of life. The author uses symbolism because it is a professional writing skill. Also, the author wants to let the reader think. If the author just tells the reader what is going on, the story will be too boring. The use of symbolism not only makes the story more interesting but also gets the reader to keep reading and keep thinking.

This story teaches me many things. Education is a powerful tool for the future. Poor people can pursue a better life by receiving an education at school. Although poor people don’t have money, they still have love and support from their family members. The author shows me the meaning of symbolism and how to use it. The author uses a soccer ball, the school uniform, and the music box to tell me that passion for something that you really like, getting an education, and seeing the good part of life even though you cannot talk, are important in life.
