Story review of All Summer in a Day

The story All summer in a day by Ray Bradbury is about a young girl named Margot who is at school on Venus with everyone else. Everyone is gathered by the window to wait for the rain to stop and finally see the sun. No one remembers the sun because they came to venus when they were young and they can only see the sun every seven years. Everybody dislikes Margot because she says things about the sun that no one believes but she is correct. She came to Venus some time ago but when she did, she remembered the sun and she is also going back to earth next year too. When the sun is about to come out, the school bully pushes Margot into a closet and locks it. The teacher comes and everyone sees the sun. It is as Margot said but then they remember Margot is in the closet and slowly they open it. This story teaches us about how it’s common that people only believe what they see, you should rely on facts rather than your own biased experience, and how to handle disconformity in life.

It's common that some people usually just believe what they see with their own eyes or what connects to their personal experience in life. These people will question or be doubtful when exposed to information out of their normal understanding. In All summer in a day, everyone at the school thought Margot was lying about describing the sun because they had never seen it and didn’t know if she was right so they just went by saying she was lying. The kids didn’t know right from wrong so they had to choose on even though they shouldn’t have accused her. The school children not only called Margot a liar, they even went as far as putting her in a closet so she couldn’t see the sun when it came after seven years of rain. This shows just how far people will go when they don’t believe something that they couldn’t see. It's hard to understand something that you have never experienced but we should try to have an open mind and not limit yourself.

We should make judgments based on facts, data or scientific evidence and not what we see. Making judgments of what you see can be very inaccurate but the general facts that have been tested, experienced, and approved of can be trusted. In all summer in a day, the kids at the school could not believe what Margot said because they had never experienced the sun and never studied facts about it so they wouldn’t believe Margot even though she said she saw the sun. They didn’t see the sun so they wouldn’t believe it even though it sounded authentic and she said she saw it. They even went as far as to think Margot was a liar because they never saw the sun so they wouldn’t believe anything that Margot says about the sun. This goes to show how far people will go to not believe someone and also the importance of seeing things but you should actually base it off of facts. Seeing can be important to ourselves to believe things but it could be biased or incomplete. We should instead base your opinion or conclusion on real facts and scientific evidence.

In life, we will meet people with different ideas, appearance, and opinions than us. We should face this with an open mind and not with hostility. Margot was so knowledgeable and knew more about the sun so everyone else was feeling disconfirmed so they lashed out and locked Margot in a closet. One way of dealing with disconformity is with hostility but this way is wrong and harmful so you should try to handle it by discussion with your friend first. Margot also had very white skin physically so the other children thought she was disconfirmed and then they bullied Margot. It is also wrong to bully or isolate people who differ from you because it does not affect you negatively or show that they are a bad person. When people’s opinions are different from ours, we can try talking and understanding each other's view on the situation.

All summer in a day by Ray Bradbury is a very interesting story about an unfortunate girl. This book teaches us about the stereotype of only believing what you know, believing only what you see instead of facts, and that disconformity can be very aggressive. Talking about other subjects you don;t know can make you only believe and think about things you do understand and are within your reach. People might only believe what they have seen and not on facts because of how artificial it may sound. Disconformity can become very aggressive because many people don’t like people different from them but you should instead use an open mind and act in different ways to avoid this but also to make a point. An open mind can help you handle disconformity effectively and settle conflict by communicating and understanding different views on the issue.
