Story Review of Aaron’s Gift

The story “Aaron’s Gift” was written by Myron Levoy. It was mainly about a boy who found an injured pigeon while skating. He took it back home and tried to fix its wing with Noreen. His family has no objection to his action of bringing the pigeon back. He trained it to be a carrier pigeon. The gang leader Carl told Aaron that he could be a member if he brings the pigeon to be the club mascot. Aaron really wanted to join the gang, but mother refused to let him join. He then prepared Pidge for the birthday gift for grandmother. His grandma once lived in a place called Kishinev4 with other poor families in Ukraine. They hated the Cossacks because they once launched a massacre on the place where grandma lived. Carl allured Aaron to join them but used Pidge for exchange. When they were just about to burn Pidge, Aaron restrained Carl from doing this, and Pidge flew away. Grandmother thanked Aaron for his birthday gift. Conscience hidden deep inside our mind can sometimes prevent us from making the wrong decision. In this story, Aaron could not resist his temptation, so he brought Pidge to Carl, even though he had already prepared it as a gift for grandmother. Aaron found out that they were going to burn Pidge, not letting it be the club mascot. When he finally realized that bringing Pidge to the gang was an awful choice, his conscience and guilt finally made him strike back for Pidge. Aaron fights with Carol for Pidge’s life and saves the fault he made. Even though Aaron himself was badly injured in the fight, he was still feeling grateful that Pidge had lived, and gone to freedom. It was conscience that saved Pidge’s life, and stopped the mistake from growing deeper. It awakened his inner kindness and maturity, and made him take responsibility, which avoided the regrets. The sense of belonging is very meaningful and relevant for people; it is the symbol of faith and confidence. missing further explanation In this story, Aaron never had a strong desire before, but now he wanted to join the gang. Even though his mother had advised him that he should stay away from them, he still couldn’t resist his temptation. Even though he was clear about the risk of the gang, he would still use the birthday gift for grandmother to change for a chance to join the gang. It was because he has a sense of belonging, and he wanted to share secrets, swear, have their own club house, and belong to them. Belonging was very meaningful and important, because it can motivate and give us confidence to face the world. Belonging can provide us the confidence to do anything, because we know that they can support us whenever we need it. This was the meaning of belonging.

The harm from the war between humans can deeply influence the ideas and thoughts of future generations. In this story, Aaron’s grandmother once lived in a place called Kishinev4 with other poor families in Ukraine. They hated the Cossacks because they once launched a massacre on the place where grandma lived. Also, they killed grandmother’s favorite goat, which left a piece of darkness in grandmother’s childhood that she could never forget. Grandmother told this story of the Cossacks to her generations, for example Aaron. This causes Aaron to feel resentful even though he hasn’t seen the Cossacks before. And this was why Aaron criticized Carl as “Cassock”, because he was being as cruel as the real Cassocks. The influence has gone deeply, like the wars a hundred years ago that happened in China, because it was instinctive for people to be empathetic, and the thought and harm will be remembered by us the whole time for a caution and regret.

In conclusion, the story “Aaron’s Gift” has three main themes, which are conscience, sense of belonging, and war between humans. Conscience hidden deep inside our mind can sometimes prevent us from making the wrong decision. It was conscience that saved Pidge’s life, and stopped the mistake from growing deeper. It awakened his inner kindness and maturity, and made him take responsibility, which avoided regrets.
