Setting: In their house, the store, their backyard.

Plot: The room is too crowded so the girl wants to have her own room.

Genre: Realistic fiction.

Perspective:First-person.

The story “My Very Own Room”, written by Amada Irma Pérez, talks about a girl named Mijita dreaming to have her own room and her family helps her dream come true. Mijita is from a very crowded family with parents and five brothers in a very tiny house. She is the only girl among the kids and wants a little more space. Mijita comes up with an idea of changing the storage to become her own room. Mom agrees and everyone in the family helps. Everyone moves the storage stuff to the back porch covered with old blankets. Mix the leftover paint all together to make the color of magenta to paint the room. Use a yellow yarn to measure the room for the bed given by Tio Pancho. Use an empty wooden crate to be the bedside table. Use Blue Chips stamps used as money to buy the lamp. Borrow books from the public library. Mijita finally has her own room. She invites her brothers to come into the room and read books. Mijita feels like she is the luckiest girl in the world.

Privacy Matters! Privacy gives a person the freedom to be himself in his own space without being disturbed. Each person needs his own privacy to freely think and do things without being interrupted by other people, even a young school-age kid deserves his own privacy. Mijita lives in a tiny house with her parents and five little brothers. The house is too crowded. Mijita is getting too big for this. A little space is all she wants. Everyone wants to have his own room, even just a little space. People don’t want to be disturbed or interrupted by others when doing their personal things. With privacy, people can do a lot of things freely in their individual space, like talking to friends secretly or writing a diary without being seen by others. This is called privacy and privacy matters! Even a little child needs his own privacy and privacy should not be taken away by his parents.

Appreciate Family! People should show their gratitude, love, respect, and care for giving them privacy. Never take your family for granted. Your family always loves you and they will help you to do anything out of love without asking for a return. The brothers help Mijita make her own room. Once the room is ready, the two little brothers, Mario and Victor, stand in the hallway holding back the flour-sack curtain, and Mijita invites them into the room and reads them a story. Even though Mijita has her own private place, she still shares her room with younger brothers because her brothers help her make room and she wants to show her appreciation. This is family, where people show their love and care toward each other, share happiness and knowledge, and respect and appreciate what family has done for them. Mijita is happy she has her privacy which is given from the family. Is it not okay to kick out her brother after the family helps Mijita to reorganize the storage room. In other words, privacy has no violation to love, care, share, or respect. Having privacy doesn’t mean people have to be disconnected to anyone in the family.

Be optimistic! People should be creative with positive attitudes when encountering difficulties. Looking at the bright side of the problems with some imagination and creative thinking is the best strategy to make impossible become possible. Cannot purchase a bigger house, then transform the storage room to Mijita’s own room. No rolling ruler, then use yellow yarn to measure the room. No bedside table, then use an empty wooden crate to pretend. No lamp, then use collected Blue Chip stamps to exchange for a new lamp. Mijita’s family is not wealthy but they are happy with what they have. When seeing the problem, they hold optimistic attitudes toward the things they are working on, having a faith that everything will end with good results. They use their imagination and creativity to come up with some interesting but useful ideas to work on the problems they encounter. Although they are poor, they don’t complain. It is not worth having endless complaints when facing challenges. Instead, people should look at things in a bright side with some imagination and creativity to solve the problems.

My Very Own Room” is a very heartfelt story from a girl Mijita establishing her own room with family’s help. The author writes this story to inform readers three main things: privacy matters, appreciating family, and being optimistic. A person, even a child, needs his privacy, his own little space, to freely do things without being screened. He should be thankful for the family giving him privacy. But having privacy doesn’t mean he should kick out the family members out of his room. Instead, he should show his care, love, and respect, even appreciation to what his family has done for him. In other words, there is no conflict between privacy and care in the family. Also, if people could see the problems in a more positive way with some imagination and creativity, everything is possible to be fixed and turned out great!
