The painting The Starry Night is drawn by Vincent van Gogh in 1889 when he was 36 years old, one year before he suicided. It is a vivid, stunning, and beautiful picture. To me, I think it is famous because of its details of the sky and the town. It has stars shining brightly, moonlight lighting the town underneath, and wind waving the branches of a thriving tall tree with rolling hills. It describes a cool countryside filled with green grasses and maybe even some healthy farm animals. It is inaccurate but extraordinary. Therefore, I have three reasons to explain why this painting is so comforting and magnificent.
The first reason is that it has bright colors outlining the stars light, which at one point; it fades away into the dark night sky. Even the moon has some light shining around it. Its bright colors stand out in the darkness, although the light is almost too bright. The moon has a super curvy crescent shape, a rare position at night. It looks like to me that the stars also have such vibrant lights and colors to light the town up at night; when nobody could see clearly in pitch darkness. In the black night, they are the source of light to see with. Nothing in the night sky can get brighter then these stars and the moon. This makes people feel like there is a story of the stars and the moon. The bright colors give the people passion about life.
The second reason is that the picture seems dynamic. It has strong or gentle breezes rustling the leaves and making the tree’s limbs and branches bob slowly and gracefully up and down. The tree hovers or watches over the small city. As the winds start, they also make swirling patterns on the sky. It blows against strong windows and doors, along with some tiny bushes. But most of the time, the wind travels slowly through and over the tall tree and blowing into pitch blackness. Also, green rolling hills make a beautiful background for the small town. It almost looks like it once had a river or the city was rainy, for the grasses and bushes are so green. They thrive happily. I never saw healthier plants before. I am so impressed by how much painting skills and imagination Van Gogh has.
The third reason is that through this picture, I can almost feel like the painter is coming to life to show us his lifetime. The trees look realistic, the rolling hills have tall, wavy grass, and the moon shines brightly. Van Gogh draws this picture as a night sky out of his bedroom; he thinks this will be a new type of art. I feel like the painting is coming to life just to show us Van Gogh’s penniless, painful, life. Although he is poor, his values are rich. My own impression is that the picture shows Van Gogh’s personality and passion.
The artist Van Gogh has a different view of life; he draws what he imagines as a beautiful, dreamy landscape. He doesn’t just draw what he sees, he draws what he thinks will be a future scene of life. I think that he was an amazing artist, for he can see something that isn’t there, and what he imagines is more beautiful than the reality.
