“ I don't know anything with certainty, but seeing the stars makes me dream.” - Vincent Van Gogh.
Vincent Van Gogh was a dutch painter. His famous paintings include Starry Night, Almond Blossom, and The Red Vineyard, etc. Starry Night was founded by three women and they gave it to the Museum of Modern Arts in 1941. Vincent Van Gogh went to a mental hospital after the fight with famous artist Paul Gauguin. He painted Starry Night after seeing the view from his window. He painted it in the morning while using his memory. He also included his enormous emotions which makes it so special. Starry Night depicts a dreamy interpretation of Vincent asylum room's sweeping view. Starry Night, an oil painting on canvas, is Vincent’s most famous picture and one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture.
Vincent tried on different styles on Starry Night. He tried post-impressionism, neo-impressionism, pointillism. Eventually he decided to use parallel brushwork. Starry Night has ten swirly stars, the planet Venus, a yellow Crescent moon, hills, a cypress tree, and houses. The village is painted with dark colors but the brightly lit windows create a sense of comfort. The cypress tree is the symbol that connects land and heaven.
I love Starry Night because it looks so calm and relaxing. It reminds me of peaceful ocean waves lightly crashing against shore, and it triggers the sound of flowing water to my ears. Blue is my favorite color and Starry Night has many shades of blue. The blue in Starry Night brings the calmness to the painting. Starry Night looks like a real place. It just looks so realistic. I feel like I am in the painting when I see it. The masterpiece makes me dream about space, stars, and a village at night.
In Starry Night there is a lot of moving and undulating. Vincent added thickly encrusted and a lot of impasto. He also added a lot of paint on the surface. The texture is almost haptic and touchable but in some places will see bare spaces. The colors are also bright and vibrant. Vincent used rich blues and yellows to paint the night sky, with light greens scattered throughout. His lack of blending creates a broken color effect, which seems to reiterate the sense of movement and turbulence in the painting. The colors appear to vibrate as visitors' eyes bounce between all the distinct colors.
Starry Night is very interesting and it is very unique. Many paintings have copied the format of Starry Night. I have seen some of Vincent's paintings online but if I study them I will learn a lot just from paintings. I have always wanted to be an artist when I grow up and I wish I could draw some drawings just as unique as Starry Night. (471 words)
