Starbucks' Response, Correct Actions?

In April 2018, two black men went into a Starbucks store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson came for a real estate meeting. Shortly after they came into the store, one of the men had a request to go to the restroom, but his request was denied by the staff of Starbucks. The reason was because they have not consumed yet, so they have got no permission to go to the restroom. Just a few minutes later, the staff asked Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson to leave the store. The two men were still waiting for another man to come to their meeting, so they serenely refused the request. After their rejection, the staff of Starbucks called the police, and the two men were arrested. This incident led to the accusation of racial discrimination against Starbucks. The chain leaders apologized and sent their staff to training. Personally, I believe Starbucks' Response is the correct action.


Starbuck’s action is advisable, their action can minimize the loss. Once it triggers the problem of racial discrimination, it will certainly cause a social attack against Starbucks. And the consequence of this is that there will be less customers, so the income of Starbucks will decrease. So, the first thing that Starbucks should do is to change all the negative opinions of people to Starbucks, so they can keep having the income. So, the chain's leaders of Starbucks apologized and they met the two men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, who were the victims of this whole incident, to show their sincerity of apologizing. Then they closed more than 8,000 Starbucks shops and sent 175,000 employees of the stores to the training. This action can show their favorable attitude to the incident, so Starbucks could be accepted by people again.


Every life matter, racial discrimination is intolerable, and this is not acceptable for most people and the moral. And there was an incident that happened in Starbucks which triggered racial profiling, protests, and threats of boycotts. Starbucks must give the society a solution, because no one wants this to happen the second time, either the Starbucks. And Starbucks has to show the society that they are willing to prevent this kind of problem happening again, so Starbucks shut the shops for four hours. During those four hours, they sent 175,000 employees of the stores to the training, and it is necessary to do that. We have to know that shutting the shops for four hours will definitely cause a negative financial effect. The action of Starbuck showed their determination of prevent this kind of problems happening again, and it also showed their attitude towards racial discrimination, which is absolutely no tolerance.


The response of Starbucks sending employees to training about race will also influence other people’s thoughts, which means they have set a good example to people. Closing the shops for four hours and sending 175,000 employees of the stores to the training will cause some negative financial effects to Starbucks. The leaders of Starbucks knew the consequences it will cause, but they still have an optimistic attitude towards this, and they hope it could make positive differences. From the record of Starbucks’ reports, the consolidated Net Revenues Up 11% to Record $6.3 Billion. This data could fully explain that during 2018, the action of Starbucks has truly influenced people’s thoughts to them, and it did make a positive difference.


In conclusion, the incident of two black men who had been asked to leave Starbucks and they were arrested after refusing has caused protests from people. I believe Starbucks' response to this situation is correct because of the following arguments. Starbuck’s action is advisable, their action can minimize the loss. This action can show their favorable attitude to the incident, so Starbucks could be accepted by people again. Racial discrimination is intolerable, and this is not acceptable for most people and the moral. The action of Starbuck showed their determination of prevent this kind of problems happening again, and it also showed their attitude towards racial discrimination, which is absolutely no tolerance. The response of Starbucks sending employees to training about race will also influence other people’s thoughts, which means they have set a good example to people. During 2018, the action of Starbucks has truly influenced people’s thoughts, and it did make a positive difference.
