Sand dunes are things that can be made by humans and also nature. When it is made by humans it is used to stop the wind from blowing the beach sand to the nearby towns and to stop the waves from spilling past the beaches. And if it is natural it is made by the sand which gets together and shapes a mound and ridge by gravity. In this story the sand dunes that the author talks about are human made. It is made by Tony Pontari’s fourth-grade class. And they make the sand dunes to protect the nearby town and the beach but also to finish their science project.
When people are trying to do things there will always be problems to solve. In this science project the fourth-grade are doing. They have a big problem. The big problem is that all the sand dunes they have made are always destroyed by the big storm. People try again and again but they always get the same ending. All the sand dunes people have made have all disappeared after the storm and can’t help the town from not being in danger of the enormous waves and a lot of the sand blowing into it. This is a very big problem because if people can’t fix this problem then all they have done is make the sand dunes useless.
Even though there are alot of problems in our life, there is a saying “there are always more solutions than difficulties.” The students are very smart and they quickly find the solution and it really works. The solution they find is using the dead christmas trees to build the dunes. They put the christmas trees standing up in three trenches, each 100 feet long. And then when the next dead christmas trees to make the dunes is better than using the sand to but storm comes the other sand dunes have been blown away but the tree dunes the fourth-grade class made. The problem is solved and the solution is to use the trees instead of the sands.
If a project is done very well then people will continue doing it. The first group of students make this problem of the sand dunes solve and when it is the next year the new fourth-grade students decide to continue this science project. Their continuing make the nearby middle school have the attention. Very very soon, the middle school also decided to do this science project in their school too. Because there are two schools doing the same thing which is building dunes with dead christmas trees, the town officials also decide to help them. So, every year when Christmas ends, the workers from the town will bring the dead trees and help the students build the dunes.
In this story, the fourth-grade students are building the sand dunes every year when they have the science project. The sand dunes are used to stop the wind and waves from blowing and spilling into the town. But very soon the students find a problem. The big problem is that everytime when there is a storm the sand dunes they have built will disappear. So, they find a way to solve the problem and the solution they have used is very good. They use dead christmas trees instead of using the sand to build the dunes. Because this way is so good that the next fourth-grade decided to continue doing this science project and even the middle school and the town official nearby joined in too.
